Differences in retinal microvasculature between large artery atherosclerosis and small artery disease: an optical coherence tomography angiography study
Conclusions: We found LAA patients had significantly reduced DVC density compared with SAD; we also showed anterior LAA patients had significantly reduced SVC density compared with posterior LAA. These findings suggest retinal imaging has the potential to be used to detect microvasculature changes in subtypes of ischemic stroke.PMID:36620764 | PMC:PMC9816383 | DOI:10.3389/fnagi.2022.1053638

Rapid lipid-laden plaque identification in intravascular optical coherence tomography imaging based on time-series deep learning
ConclusionsThese encouraging results suggest that this method will allow for high throughput video-rate atherosclerotic plaque assessment through automated tissue characterization for in vivo imaging by providing faster screening to assist in guided decision making during percutaneous coronary interventions.PMID:36307914 | DOI:10.1117/1.JBO.27.10.106006

Attention-Based UNet Deep Learning Model for Plaque Segmentation in Carotid Ultrasound for Stroke Risk Stratification: An Artificial Intelligence Paradigm
This study proposes an attention-channel-based UNet deep learning (DL) model that identifies the carotid plaques in the internal carotid artery (ICA) and common carotid artery (CCA) images. Our experiments consist of 970 ICA images from the UK, 379 CCA images from diabetic Japanese patients, and 300 CCA images from post-menopausal women from Hong Kong. We combined both CCA images to form an integrated database of 679 images. A rotation transformation technique was applied to 679 CCA images, doubling the database for the experiments. The cross-validation K5 (80% training: 20% testing) protocol was applied for accuracy deter...

Identification of immune cell infiltration and diagnostic biomarkers in unstable atherosclerotic plaques by integrated bioinformatics analysis and machine learning
CONCLUSION: M1 macrophages is an important cause of unstable plaque formation, and CD68, PAM, and IGFBP6 could be used as diagnostic markers to identify unstable plaques effectively.PMID:36211422 | PMC:PMC9537477 | DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2022.956078

Vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) in vascular inflammatory diseases
Vasa. 2022 Oct 6. doi: 10.1024/0301-1526/a001031. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACT Vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) also known as amino oxidase copper containing 3 (AOC3) is a pro-inflammatory and versatile molecule with adhesive and enzymatic properties. VAP-1 is a primary amine oxidase belonging to the semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) family, which catalyzes the oxidation of primary amines leading to the production of ammonium, formaldehyde, methylglyoxal, and hydrogen peroxide. VAP-1 is mainly expressed by endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, adipocytes and pericytes. It is involved in a repertoire of bi...

Preventing post-stroke dementia. The MARCH Trial. Protocol and statistical analysis plan of a randomized clinical trial testing the safety and efficacy of Maraviroc in post-stroke cognitive impairment
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this work could lead to a novel, readily available, therapeutic avenue to reduce PSCI, and possibly other pathologies. This study will test safety and effectiveness of Maraviroc in limiting cognitive deterioration and/or post stroke cognitive impairment in patients with cerebral small vessel disease.SCHEDULE: First-patient first-visit was May 2021. Recruitment to complete in 2023, follow-up to complete in 2024.PMID:36082248 | PMC:PMC9446318 | DOI:10.1177/23969873221098857

Far wall plaque segmentation and area measurement in common and internal carotid artery ultrasound using U-series architectures: An unseen Artificial Intelligence paradigm for stroke risk assessment
Comput Biol Med. 2022 Aug 28;149:106017. doi: 10.1016/j.compbiomed.2022.106017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke risk assessment using deep learning (DL) requires automated, accurate, and real-time risk assessment while ensuring compact model size. Previous DL paradigms suffered from challenges like memory size, low speed, and complex in nature lacking multi-ethnic, and multi-institution databases. This research segments and measures the area of the plaque far wall of the common carotid (CCA) and internal carotid arteries (ICA) in B-mode ultrasound using four types of solo, namely, UNet, UNet+, UNet++, and UNet+++, and...

Preprocedural determination of an occlusion pathomechanism in endovascular treatment of acute stroke: a machine learning-based decision
CONCLUSIONS: An ML-PM could accurately determine an occlusion pathomechanism with common preprocedural findings. A decision flowchart consisting of the four most influential findings was clinically applicable and superior to single common preprocedural findings for determining an occlusion pathomechanism.PMID:35710314 | DOI:10.1136/neurintsurg-2022-018946

New strategy for clinical etiologic diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke and blood biomarker discovery based on machine learning
RSC Adv. 2022 May 16;12(23):14716-14723. doi: 10.1039/d2ra02022j. eCollection 2022 May 12.ABSTRACTAcute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a syndrome characterized by high morbidity, prevalence, mortality, recurrence and disability. The longer the delay before proper treatment of a stroke, the greater the likelihood of brain damage and disability. Computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance are the primary choices for fast diagnosis of AIS in the early stage, which can provide certain information about infarction location and degree, and even the vascular distribution of lesions responsible for strokes. However, this is quite...
