The association of stroke risk factors with the future thickness of carotid atherosclerotic plaques
DISCUSSION: The effect of each predictor on plaque thickness is complicated by interactions with other risk factors, particularly for the left carotid artery. The side of carotid artery involvement should be considered for stroke prevention.PMID:37125820 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2023.2208484

Deep convolution neural network for screening carotid calcification in dental panoramic radiographs
PLOS Digit Health. 2023 Apr 12;2(4):e0000081. doi: 10.1371/journal.pdig.0000081. eCollection 2023 Apr.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke, a leading global cause of death and disability, is commonly caused by carotid arteries atherosclerosis. Carotid artery calcification (CAC) is a well-known marker of atherosclerosis. Such calcifications are classically detected by ultrasound screening. In recent years it was shown that these calcifications can also be inferred from routine panoramic dental radiographs. In this work, we focused on panoramic dental radiographs taken from 500 patients, manually labelling each of the patients' sides (ea...

Stroke risk study based on deep learning-based magnetic resonance imaging carotid plaque automatic segmentation algorithm
CONCLUSION: The evaluations in this work have demonstrated that this methodology produces acceptable results for classifying magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data.PMID:36910524 | PMC:PMC9998982 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2023.1101765

Ischemic stroke prediction of patients with carotid atherosclerotic stenosis < em > via < /em > multi-modality fused network
Front Neurosci. 2023 Feb 24;17:1118376. doi: 10.3389/fnins.2023.1118376. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTCarotid atherosclerotic stenosis of the carotid artery is an important cause of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. The aim of this study was to predict the presence or absence of clinical symptoms in unknown patients by studying the existence or lack of symptoms of patients with carotid atherosclerotic stenosis. First, a deep neural network prediction model based on brain MRI imaging data of patients with multiple modalities is constructed; it uses the multi-modality features extracted from the neural network as inputs and the ...

Deep-Learning for Epicardial Adipose Tissue Assessment With Computed  Tomography: Implications for Cardiovascular Risk Prediction
CONCLUSIONS: Automated assessment of EAT volume is possible in CCTA, including in patients who are technically challenging; it forms a powerful marker of metabolically unhealthy visceral obesity, which could be used for cardiovascular risk stratification.PMID:36881425 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcmg.2022.11.018

Stroke risk prediction by color Doppler ultrasound of carotid artery-based deep learning using Inception V3 and VGG-16
CONCLUSION: In this research, we classified color Doppler ultrasound images into high-risk carotid vulnerable and stable carotid plaques. We fine-tuned pre-trained deep learning models to classify color Doppler ultrasound images according to our dataset. Our suggested framework helps prevent incorrect diagnoses caused by low image quality and individual experience, among other factors.PMID:36864909 | PMC:PMC9971808 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2023.1111906

Predictive Accuracy of Stroke Risk Prediction Models Across Black and White Race, Sex, and Age Groups
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this analysis of Black and White individuals without stroke or transient ischemic attack among 4 US cohorts, existing stroke-specific risk prediction models and novel machine learning techniques did not significantly improve discriminative accuracy for new-onset stroke compared with the pooled cohort equations, and the REGARDS self-report model had the best calibration. All algorithms exhibited worse discrimination in Black individuals than in White individuals, indicating the need to expand the pool of risk factors and improve modeling techniques to address observed racial disparities and imp...

Small vessel disease burden predicts functional outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke using machine learning
CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that different SVD markers had distinct prognostic weights in AIS patients, and SVD burden alone may accurately predict the SVO-AIS patients' prognosis.PMID:36650639 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14071

Differences in retinal microvasculature between large artery atherosclerosis and small artery disease: an optical coherence tomography angiography study
Conclusions: We found LAA patients had significantly reduced DVC density compared with SAD; we also showed anterior LAA patients had significantly reduced SVC density compared with posterior LAA. These findings suggest retinal imaging has the potential to be used to detect microvasculature changes in subtypes of ischemic stroke.PMID:36620764 | PMC:PMC9816383 | DOI:10.3389/fnagi.2022.1053638
