In-hospital stroke and mortality trends after left ventricular assist device implantation in the United States from 2017 to 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found a significant downtrend in the in-hospital mortality rates among patients with LVAD without substantial changes in stroke rate trends over the study timeframe. As stroke rates remained steady, we hypothesize that improved management along with better control of blood pressure, could have played an important role in survival benefit over the study time frame.PMID:37387231 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231183723

Featured Review: Virtual reality for stroke rehabilitation
Many people after having a stroke have difficulty moving, thinking, and sensing. This often results in problems with everyday activities such as writing, walking, and driving. Virtual reality and interactive video gaming therapy  involves using computer-based programs designed to simulate real-life objects and events. This may have some advantages over traditional  therapy approaches as they can give people an opportunity to practice everyday activities that are not or cannot be practiced within the hospital environment and patients may spend more time in therapy as the activity might be more motivating.A team of Cochra...

Outcome Measure Scores Predict Discharge Destination in Patients With Acute and Subacute Stroke: A Systematic Review and Series of Meta-analyses.
CONCLUSION: Outcome measure scores are strong predictors of discharge destination among patients with stroke and provide an objective means of early discharge planning. Discharge decisions should be made with consideration for patient-specific biopsychosocial factors that may supersede isolated results of the outcome measures, and further research needs to assess the success of the location that a patient is referred at discharge.Video Abstract available for more insights from the authors (see Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A194). Outcome and predictive factors in post-stroke seizures: A retrospective case-control study
Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke [1]. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death for Americans [1]. Stroke is a commonly identified cause of epilepsy in patients older than 35, and the most common cause of seizures in the elderly [2,3]. From stroke registry data, 5-20% of all patients who have suffered stroke will develop seizures[4]. Frequency is variable due to different study methodologies[4]. In a multicenter, prospective study, seizures occurred in 8.9% of 1897 patients with stroke [4,5].

Performance of the RACE Score for the Prehospital Identification of Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke in a Suburban/Rural EMS Service.
CONCLUSION: The RACE scale demonstrated acceptable discrimination, yet the sensitivity and positive predictive value were lower in this cohort of EMS professionals in the U.S. than in the original validation study conducted in Spain. Further work is needed to determine the optimal prehospital screening tool for identification of LVO. PMID: 30668202 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Role of Informed Consent for Thrombolysis in Acute Ischemic Stroke.
Authors: Comer AR, Damush TM, Torke AM, Williams LS Abstract Although tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is the only medication approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for acute ischemic stroke, there is no consensus about the need for informed consent for its use. As a result, hospitals throughout the U.S. have varying requirements regarding obtaining informed consent from patients for the use of tPA, ranging from no requirement for informed consent to a requirement for verbal or written informed consent. We conducted a study to (1) determine current beliefs about obtaining patients' infor...
