How do cardiovascular risk factors correlate with post-stroke cognitive function: Directly or indirectly through stroke severity?
ConclusionThis is the first Chinese study exploring the moderated and mediating associations between cardiovascular risk factors, stroke severity, and cognitive function after stroke. Age, female sex, and atrial fibrillation were directly associated with lower cognition after stroke. The combination of hypertension might have a positive effect on cognition.

Sex differences and risk factors in recurrent ischemic stroke
ConclusionHypertension and dyslipidemia were significant risk factors of recurrent ischemic stroke in both genders. Smoking and alcohol drinking were significant risk factors associated with ischemic stroke recurrence in males. Therefore, smoking cessation and alcohol abstinence are recommended after the first stroke to prevent recurrent ischemic stroke especially for males. Characteristics of stroke after liver and kidney transplantation
ConclusionsIn-hospital, perioperative, and hemorrhagic strokes were more common in the LT group than in the KT group. Ischemic stroke subtypes did not differ significantly between the two groups and undetermined etiology was the most common cause of ischemic stroke in both groups. High mortality after stroke was noted in transplantation patients and was associated with in-hospital stroke.

Blood pressure trajectory of inpatient stroke rehabilitation patients from the Determining Optimal Post-Stroke Exercise (DOSE) trial over the first 12 months post-stroke
ConclusionBlood pressure increased after inpatient rehabilitation over the first 12 months post-stroke, especially among those with a history of hypertension. The 4-week aerobic gait training intervention did not influence this trajectory.

Fighting Against Stroke in Latin America: A Joint Effort of Medical Professional Societies and Governments
Conclusion: The initiative to collaborate, exchange experiences, and unite societies and governments to improve stroke care in Latin America has yielded good results. Important advances have been made in the region in terms of increasing the number of acute stroke care services, implementing reperfusion treatments and creating programs for the detection and treatment of risk factors. We hope that this approach can reduce inequalities in stroke care in Latin America and serves as a model for other under-resourced environments.

Diabetes: Chronic Metformin Treatment and Outcome Following Acute Stroke
ConclusionSimilar to previous reports, our study shows that diabetes adversely affects stroke outcome. The use of prior metformin is associated with better outcome in patients with ischemic stroke and results in lower mortality. The positive effects of metformin require further research to better understand its mechanism.

Blood-based protein biomarkers for the diagnosis of acute stroke: A discovery-based SWATH-MS proteomic approach
ConclusionOur discovery phase study identified potential protein biomarker candidates for the diagnosis of acute stroke and highlighted significant pathways associated with different stroke subtypes. These potential biomarker candidates warrant further validation in future studies with a large cohort of stroke patients to investigate their diagnostic performance.

Stroke Severity and Outcomes in Patients With Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation
Conclusion: Stroke severity and in-hospital outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed AF did not differ from those in patients with known AF after adjustment for clinically relevant factors. The importance of detection of latent AF and subsequent anticoagulation in preventing severe stroke should be further emphasized.

Effect of Diabetes on Post-stroke Recovery: A Systematic Narrative Review
Conclusions: The current review suggests that the post-stroke recovery of ADL seems to be poorer in patients with diabetes than patients without diabetes. Stress Hyperglycemia and Outcome of Non-diabetic Patients After Acute Ischemic Stroke
Conclusion: Stress hyperglycemia, measured by glucose-to-HbA1c ratio, was related to an elevated risk of stroke recurrence and all-cause death in patients with acute ischemic stroke but without diabetes.

Association of Diabetic Retinopathy With Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: The presence of DR is associated with an increased risk of stroke in diabetic patients. This correlation is robust in T2DM patients but uncertain in T1DM patients. Our findings indicate that DR is an important biomarker for the prediction of stroke. To further validate the role of DR in stroke-risk stratification, additional research is required on the association between the stage of DR and stroke risk, and more studies including T1DM patients are necessary.
