Safety and efficacy of glucose-insulin-potassium treatment in coronary artery bypass graft surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention
The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate protective effects of glucose–insulin–potassium (GIK) on outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We systematically searched Medline/Pubmed, Elsevier, Embase, Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar. A total of 1206 studies were retrieved during the extensive literature search of all major databases; however, 38 trials reporting the end-point of interest were selected. We performed a pooled analysis of outcomes following PCI: incidence of cardiac arrest [odds ratio (OR) of 0.91; 95% confidence interval (CI): ...

Age-dependent trends in postoperative mortality and preoperative comorbidity in isolated coronary artery bypass surgery: a nationwide study ADULT CARDIAC
CONCLUSION Patients are getting older at the time of surgery and have a heavier burden of comorbidities than before. The proportion of patients undergoing urgent or emergency surgery increased with age and over time. Despite this, the 30-day mortality decreased over time and long-term survival increased, except in octogenarians where it was stable. Octogenarians had substantially higher 30-day mortality compared with younger patients but surgery can be performed with acceptable risks and good long-term outcomes.

Pulsatile-flow mechanical circulatory support (MCS) as a bridge to transplantation or recovery. Single-centre experience with the POLCAS system in 2014.
CONCLUSIONS: The POLCAS heart assist system is an effective method of treatment as a bridge to transplantation or recovery in patients with end-stage heart failure. Early survival after the treatment remains at a satisfactory level. The main problem is the large number of complications related to the therapy. PMID: 26702278 [PubMed]

Adherence to antihypertensive therapy among heart transplant recipients.
CONCLUSIONS: Creation of an active attitude of the patient in the process of treatment is a crucial and at the same time often difficult task demanding cooperation of the patient, the patient's close family and the whole therapeutic team. PMID: 26336447 [PubMed]

Outcomes on Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices: A Single Institutional 9-Year Experience
Conclusions These data indicate excellent survival for BTT and DT patients on long-term LVAD support. However, for LVAD therapy to become a plausible alternative to heart transplantation, we need to further decrease the incidence of postoperative complications.

Longevity and admission to nursing home according to age after isolated coronary artery bypass surgery: a nationwide cohort study
CONCLUSIONS The majority of all patients selected for CABG surgery in Denmark between 1996–2012, including the elderly, were able to live independently at home without the need of home care for many years after CABG. The risk of nursing home admission was small and dependent on the patient's age, sex and preoperative comorbidities.

Evaluation of the HeartWare ventricular assist device Lavare cycle in a particle image velocimetry model and in clinical practice TX & MCS
CONCLUSIONS The Lavare cycle effectively generates ventricular washout and the adverse event profiles of ReVOLVE patients with the Lavare cycle on were better than those with the Lavare cycle off. Larger studies are warranted to verify the positive effect of the Lavare cycle and to optimize speed modulation settings, so additional clinically relevant improvements can be realized.

Predictors of Atrial Fibrillation After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A  Bayesian Analysis
Conclusions This prospective Bayesian analysis identified five independent preoperative predictors of POAF after isolated CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass: CHA2DS2-VASc score, severe obesity, preoperative β-blocker use, preoperative antiplatelet therapy, and renal failure. The main interest in the CHA2DS2-VASc score as a predictor of POAF is that it is a simple and widely used bedside tool. Patients with these independent predictors of POAF may constitute a target population to test preventive strategies, such as non-antiarrhythmic and antiarrhythmic drugs.

Minimally Invasive Aortic Root Replacement with Valved Conduits through Partial Upper Sternotomy
Conclusions Partial upper sternotomy is a feasible access for safe aortic root replacement with valved conduits. Impact of flow, gradient, and left ventricular function on outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement
ConclusionsIn patients undergoing TAVR, low flow was an independent predictor of 1‐year mortality and HF, and a stronger predictor than either low AVG or LVEF. Patients with low flow and preserved EF had increased mortality and HF at 1‐year, while those with low flow and reduced EF had outcomes similar to patients with normal flow.

Risk Factors of On-Pump Conversion during Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft.
Conclusion: Patients who undergo OPCABG and have CHF or a lower EF (<35%) are more likely to undergo on-pump conversion, while preoperative BB administration could help prevent conversions from OPCABG to on-pump CABG. PMID: 29124027 [PubMed]

Carotid artery stenting followed by open heart surgery in 323 patients: One ‐year results and influencing factors
ConclusionsCAS followed by OHS is a safe and effective treatment for patients with concomitant carotid and cardiac disease within 1‐year follow up. The interval between CAS and OHS, congestive heart failure, and renal insufficiency could obviously influence the 1‐year results.

Complex coronary bifurcation treatment by a novel stenting technique: Bench test, fluid dynamic study and clinical outcomes
ConclusionsThe revascularization of complex large coronary bifurcation disease using the Nano‐crush technique appeared promising thanks to the favorable fluid dynamic profile, complete coverage of the SD ostium, and very small metal amount at the carina.
