Persistence of secondary prevention medication and related factors for acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack in China.
CONCLUSIONS: More than half of patients with AIS and TIA reported discontinuing one or more secondary prevention medications within 3 months of hospital discharge. Several factors associated with medication persistence were identified. Here, we propose strategies that could be implemented to improve the quality of secondary prevention. Association of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio with silent brain infarcts in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether the inflammation as measured by increased platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) predispose to silent infarcts in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). METHODS: The present study investigated a total of 48 new diagnosed patients with PAF who had no signs of stroke. PLR, which was calculated as the ratio of the platelet count to the lymphocyte count, C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were measured due to evaluate inflammatory state. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to evaluate the presence of silent brain infarcts (SBIs) in patients....

Frequency and risk factors of spontaneous hemorrhagic transformation following ischemic stroke on the initial brain CT or MRI: data from the China National Stroke Registry (CNSR).
DISCUSSION: Spontaneous HT occurred in 0.92% of the patients with IS in the acute stage. Being female, excess alcohol consumption, atrial fibrillation, and a prolonged period between IS onset and initial imaging were associated with an increased risk of spontaneous HT. Antithrombotic therapy for ischaemic stroke patients with AF/RHD in West China daily practice.
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that overall real-world use of warfarin in IS patients with AF and/or RHD is low before and after admission in West China. Implementation study on this respect should be conducted in this area to improve the daily practice. PMID: 26178783 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between polyvascular atherosclerosis and estimated glomerular filtration rate in patients with ischaemic stroke: data analysis of the patients in the Chinese National Stroke Registry.
This study evaluated the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in ischemic stroke (IS) patients with polyvascular disease (PolyVD) and analysed the relationship between PolyVD and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in IS patients. METHODS: Data from 9152 consecutive IS patients from the China National Stroke Registry were analysed. PolyVD was defined as patients with IS and coronary artery disease (CAD) and/or peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Chronic kidney disease was defined as eGFR < 60 mL/minute/1.73 m(2).The prevalence of CKD in IS patients with PolyVD was calculated. Logistic regression w...

Is serum total bilirubin useful to differentiate cardioembolic stroke from other stroke subtypes?
CONCLUSIONS: Serum TB level was independently associated with cardioembolic stroke. The combination of clinical data and serum TB may be a feasible strategy to diagnose cardioembolic stroke in the acute phase. PMID: 25891436 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors impact the adherence rate of prophylaxis for deep venous thrombosis in acute ischaemic stroke patients: an analysis of the China National Stroke Registry.
We examined the factors that impact the adherence rate of DVT prophylaxis in stroke patients from the China National Stroke Registry (CNSR). METHOD: Records of 12 173 acute ischaemic stroke patients with follow-up admitted to 132 hospitals in CNSR from September 1, 2007 to August 30, 2008 were reviewed. Data from 4643 patients eligible for DVT prophylaxis were analysed. Generalised estimating equations were used to identify the patient's and hospital's factors that impact the practice of DVT prophylaxis. RESULTS: Among 4643 acute ischaemic stroke patients eligible for DVT prophylaxis, the overall adherence rate of ...

Cilostazol may prevent cardioembolic stroke in patients undergoing antiplatelet therapy.
CONCLUSIONS: Cilostazol may prevent cardioembolic stroke in patients undergoing antiplatelet therapy. This could be a novel strategy for cardioembolic stroke prevention potentially by affecting cardiac remodelling, in contrast to secondary anticoagulant therapy.
