Predictors of mortality and recurrent stroke within five years of intracerebral hemorrhage.
Conclusion Predictors of recurrent stroke were older females, hypertension, diabetes, and brain stem hemorrhage. These findings may help to determine specific treatment strategies and improve quality of health care for such patients. PMID: 30134784 [PubMed - in process]

A mini review: garlic extract and vascular diseases.
Authors: Zhu Y, Anand R, Geng X, Ding Y Abstract Vascular diseases refer to medical conditions that narrow blood vessels. Narrowed cardiac or cerebral arteries can lead to myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke. Risk factors including atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes may induce either cardiovascular or cerebral complications. Based on current research, garlic favorably affects atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes, and helps decrease the risk of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Garlic has been utilized for hundreds of years as a natural health remedy. New research is emerging regarding i...

Genetic polymorphisms of vitamin D3 metabolizing CYP24A1 and CYP2R1 enzymes in Turkish patients with ischemic stroke.
Conclusion This is the first study conducted regarding the association of CYP24A1 rs927650 and CYP2R1 rs10741657 genetic polymorphisms and ischemic stroke risk. The polymorphic genotypes of these polymorphisms, together with hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and obesity, were found as significant risk factors for ischemic stroke. A modified Essen Stroke Risk Score for predicting recurrent ischemic stroke at one year.
Conclusions The modified ESRS increased the ability of the original ESRS to predict recurrent stroke at one year among the Chinese population. PMID: 29369004 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relationship of phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) gene polymorphisms with risk of ischemic stroke: a hospital based case-control study.
CONCLUSION: SNP 83 of PDE4D gene may increase the risk for developing IS whereas SNP 87 and SNP45 of PDE4D may not be associated with the risk of IS in the North Indian population. Prospective cohort studies are required to corroborate these findings. PMID: 28562233 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

One-year outcomes and secondary prevention in patients after acute minor stroke: results from the China National Stroke Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Outcomes in individuals in China who had experienced acute minor stroke were unfavorable, underscoring the importance of early, sustained preventive therapy in this patient population. Combination of secondary prevention medication classes was associated with a lower risk of death. PMID: 28476094 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CT perfusion in predicting the morbidity and prognosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.
CONCLUSION: The difference in occipital lobe rTTP on CTA perfusion may be a potential predictor of HIE. Furthermore, abnormal CT and rTTP may be used for predicting the prognosis in HIE patients. Three principal components (F1 as a reflection of CBF, F2 as reflection of TTP, F3 as a reflection of MTT) can be used to generally describe perfusion parameters. ARHGEF10 gene polymorphism is closely associated with the risk of ischemic stroke in Northern Han Chinese population.
This study aims to evaluate the potential association of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ARHGEF10 with ischemic stroke (IS) in northern Han Chinese population. Three SNPs of ARHGEF10 gene were analyzed in 385 IS patients and 362 hypertension control patients using the ligase detection reaction (LDR) method. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that GG genotypes of SNP rs2280887 were associated with an increased risk of IS in dominant, recessive, and additive models. Moreover, SNP rs9657362 and SNP rs4480162 were significantly associated with IS in dominant and additive models. These results indicate that...

Stroke recurrence among 30 days survivors of ischemic stroke in a prospective community-based study.
Authors: Ryglewicz D, Baranska-Gieruszczak M, Czlonkowska A, Lechowicz W, Hier D Abstract A cohort of 209 patients (105 men and 104 women), who survived 30 days after "first ever-in-lifetime ischemic stroke' were followed for one year. Predictors ofsurvival were examined by log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards method. Twenty-four patients had a stroke recurr~nce (11.4%). Thirteen of the patients with recurrent stroke (54%) died because of the sequelae of the second stroke. Stroke recurred in 16% of patients with stoke due to atherosclerosis, in 12.5% of patients with cardioembolic stroke, and in 4.4% of patie...

Risk factors between intracranial-extracranial atherosclerosis and anterior-posterior circulation stroke in ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Risk factors are different between ICAS and ECAS, ACS and PCS, and ICAS/ECAS with ACS/PCS. Thus, targeted strategies are needed to consider these differences to prevent, treat and manage these diseases. PMID: 27796172 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A comparison of risk factors and prognosis between intra and extracranial acute atherosclerotic stroke in the Turkish population: a prospective study.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of risk factors differs between ICAS and ECAS, and their influence differs for stroke severity and prognosis. PMID: 27477568 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio with silent brain infarcts in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether the inflammation as measured by increased platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) predispose to silent infarcts in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). METHODS: The present study investigated a total of 48 new diagnosed patients with PAF who had no signs of stroke. PLR, which was calculated as the ratio of the platelet count to the lymphocyte count, C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were measured due to evaluate inflammatory state. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to evaluate the presence of silent brain infarcts (SBIs) in patients....

Association between serum cystatin C levels and the severity or potential risk factors of acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that there is a close relationship between cystatin C and acute ischemic stroke, independently of conventional risk factors. But the levels of cystatin C are not correlated with the stroke severity. PMID: 27320246 [PubMed - in process]

Association between Endothelial nitric oxide synthase G894T gene polymorphism and risk of ischemic stroke in North Indian population: a case-control study.
CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study suggest that polymorphism in G894T position of eNOS gene might be a risk factor for IS mainly for LVD stroke subtype in North Indian population. Further large prospective studies are required to confirm these findings. PMID: 27168380 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Combined effects of family history of CVD and heart rate on ischemic stroke incidence among Inner Mongolians in China.
This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of family history of cardiovascular diseases (FHCVD) and heart rate on ischemic stroke incidence among Inner Mongolians in China. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted among 2589 participants aged 20 years and older from Inner Mongolia, China. The participants were divided into four groups according to status of FHCVD and heart rate and followed up from June 2002 to July 2012. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the combined effects of FHCVD and heart rate on the incidence of ischemic stroke. RESULTS: A total of 76 ischemic stroke occu...
