Particulate Matter and Hospital Admissions for Stroke in Beijing, China: Modification Effects by Ambient Temperature Stroke
ConclusionsThis study suggests that the associations of PM2.5, PM2.5–10, and PM10 with stroke admissions differed across levels of temperature. Short‐term exposure to PM2.5, PM2.5–10, and PM10 was positively associated with hospital admissions for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke on warm days (>13.5°C).

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation With or Without Preimplantation Balloon Aortic Valvuloplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Interventional Cardiology
Conclusions Our analysis suggests that TAVI procedures with or without preimplantation BAV were associated with similar outcomes for a number of clinically relevant end points. Further studies including a large number of patients are needed to ascertain the impact of TAVI without preimplantation BAV as a standard practice.

No Decline in the Risk of Stroke Following Incident Atrial Fibrillation Since 2000 in the Community: A Concerning Trend Epidemiology
Conclusions Strokes/TIAs are frequent after AF, occurring in 10% of patients after 5 years of follow-up. The occurrence of stroke/TIA did not decline over the last decade, which may be influenced by a leveling off of anticoagulation use. This concerning trend has major public health implications.

Conclusions We identified disagreements in stroke/TIA coding by hospital characteristics and stroke severity, particularly for milder ischemic strokes. Such systematic variations in ICD-9-CM coding practices can affect stroke case identification in epidemiological studies and may have implications for hospital-level quality metrics.

Intravenous Thrombolysis for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Patients Receiving Antiplatelet Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of 19 Studies Stroke
Conclusions Patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving long-term antiplatelet medications were associated with greater risks of developing symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage after systemic thrombolysis. However, the overall independent association between prestroke antiplatelet therapy and unfavorable outcomes or mortality was insignificant.

Efficacy and Safety of Edoxaban in Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation in the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 Trial Stroke
Conclusions Age has a greater influence on major bleeding than thromboembolic risk in patients with atrial fibrillation. Given the higher rates of bleeding and death with increasing age, treatment of elderly patients with edoxaban provides an even greater absolute reduction in safety events over warfarin, compared to treatment with edoxaban versus warfarin in younger patients. Conclusions The incidence rates of first-time hospitalizations for ischemic stroke and TIA in young Danish adults have increased substantially since the mid 1990s. The increase was particularly prominent in the most recent years.

Conclusions Although overall stroke hospitalizations declined in the United States, the reduction was more pronounced among older individuals, women, Hispanics, and whites. Renewed efforts at targeting risk factor control among vulnerable individuals may be warranted.

Identification of PTCSC3 as a Novel Locus for Large-Vessel Ischemic Stroke: A Genome-Wide Association Study Stroke
Conclusions Our data provide strong support for future studies on the role of PTCSC3 in the pathogenesis of LAA stroke and the association between LAA stroke development and thyroid function. In addition, these findings provide insights into the genetic basis of LAA stroke and identify a novel pathway that might be applicable for future therapeutic intervention.

Treatment Effect of Clopidogrel Plus Aspirin Within 12 Hours of Acute Minor Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack Stroke
Conclusions Among patients treated within 12 hours, the combination of clopidogrel and aspirin was more effective than aspirin alone in reducing the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke during the 90-day follow-up and did not increase the hemorrhagic risk.
