Abstract 376: African-American Patients Presenting with Unexplained Syncope Have Significantly Worse Outcome Compared to Other Races: An ACAP-SELF Dataset Analysis Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusions: AA who are admitted with unexplained syncope are identified according to the SELF pathway as high risk group that can likely be attributed to the presence of comorbidities and warrants hospitalization for further work-up and optimizing medical management.

Abstract 385: The Impact of Aspirin Primary Prevention Treatment Guidelines: Temporal Trends in Aspirin Use for Primary vs Secondary Prevention, 2005-2013 Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusion: Secondary prevention ASA use in primary care settings remains high, but ASA use for primary prevention of cardiovascular events is low. Despite creation of national guidelines, aspirin use in the PP population is half the rate of ASA use for secondary prevention. Additional methods to safely and effectively disseminate this primary prevention aspirin use recommendation, targeting both the public and health care providers, are warranted.

The Effect of an EDTA-based Chelation Regimen on Patients With Diabetes Mellitus and Prior Myocardial Infarction in the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) Original Articles
Conclusions— Post–myocardial infarction patients with diabetes mellitus aged ≥50 demonstrated a marked reduction in cardiovascular events with EDTA chelation. These findings support efforts to replicate these findings and define the mechanisms of benefit. However, they do not constitute sufficient evidence to indicate the routine use of chelation therapy for all post–myocardial infarction patients with diabetes mellitus. Risk of Ischemic Stroke After an Acute Myocardial Infarction in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus Original Articles
Conclusions— Ischemic stroke is a fairly common complication after an AMI in patients with diabetes mellitus, but the risk of stroke has decreased during recent years. The increased use of evidence-based therapies contributes importantly to this risk reduction, but there is still room for improvement.

Informed Choice of Composite End Points in Cardiovascular Trials Primer on Statistical Interpretation or Methods
A composite end point is often used as the primary end point to assess the efficacy of a new treatment in randomized clinical trials. In cardiovascular trials, the often rare event of the relevant primary end point (individual or composite), such as cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or both, is combined with a more common secondary end point, such as target lesion revascularization, with the aim to increase the statistical power of the study. Gómez and Lagakos developed statistical methodology to be used at the design stage of a randomized clinical trial for deciding whether to expand a study-relevant pri...

Long-Term Outcomes After Invasive Management for Older Patients With Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Original Articles
Conclusions— Older patients with non–ST-segment elevation MI with significant coronary disease face high long-term risks for mortality and nonfatal cardiovascular outcomes after early catheterization that differ by type of revascularization procedure performed. These findings can help guide the design of studies evaluating long-term therapies among elderly post-MI patients.

Abstract 50: Cardiovascular Event Rates Among Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus at Risk of Cardiovascular Events in the Large Population-based Study to Help Improve Early Evaluation and Management of Risk Factors Leading to Diabetes (SHIELD) Poster Session I
Conclusions: T2DM individuals at risk for CVD events had significant incidence of MI, stroke, and revascularization in this large US population-based study. T2DM adults with established CVD are at higher risk of CVD events than those with no CVD but have multiple risk factors.

Abstract 55: Reducing Utilization of Cardiac Stress Testing in the Outpatient Primary Care Setting: a Clinical Prediction Rule Poster Session I
Conclusion: Our simple decision rule could significantly reduce the number of stress tests ordered by primary care physicians without compromising event-free survival. Further refinement and validation of this score in both retrospective and prospective studies is warranted.

Abstract 96: Sex Differences in Pre-Event Health Status of Young Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction: The VIRGO Study Poster Session I
Conclusion: Compared with men, young women presenting with an AMI seem to have worse health status with poorer physical functioning and quality of life prior to their event. In light of these findings, it may be useful for healthcare providers to identify young women who are at increased cardiovascular risk at an earlier stage in order to optimize their health status.

Abstract 150: Resource Utilization Patterns and Outcomes Among Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients: Findings From a Multi-Payer Analysis Poster Session II
Conclusion: These findings suggest that many patients with ACS do not receive appropriate recommended antithrombotic prophylaxis, and opportunities exist to improve therapy. Increased use of software tools such as AQuA may support enhanced education efforts aimed at improving adherence to guidelines and quality of care.

Abstract 185: Health Care Resource Utilization of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) in a Geographically Distributed US Population 2006-2011 Poster Session II
Conclusion: Patients with recurrent CVEs had higher 1- and 3-year post-index overall and CV-related utilization as compared with patients without recurrent CVEs. More aggressive strategies to manage this increased long-term utilization is warranted. This study underscores the need to prevent subsequent adverse CVEs, ultimately to improve patient outcomes and help reduce overall health care utilization.

Abstract 203: Outcomes Comparison of Low Risk Medical and Surgical Patients Treated with Unfractionated Heparin vs. Enoxaparin Poster Session II
Conclusions: In low-risk medical and general surgical patients, UFH was as effective as enoxaparin in the prevention of thromboembolic events, with no difference in the incidence of HIT. When compared to UFH, enoxaparin was associated with lower MI and mortality rates, and shorter LOS and ICU LOS, at the expense of higher rates of stroke and TIA. Enoxaparin was associated with lower total inpatient costs than UFH.

Abstract 211: Association of Patient Characteristics With the Initiation of Dabigatran Versus Warfarin Among Anticoagulant Naive Patients With Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation Poster Session II
Conclusions: Patients who are younger, male, Caucasian, and recently diagnosed with NVAF were significantly more likely to be initiated by their physician on DE vs. warfarin. These findings should be considered when doing comparative analyses of outcomes between patients on DE vs. warfarin.
