Assessing Cardiac Recovery for Decommissioning of LVAD Support: Structure versus Function
Recovery of left ventricular (LV) function during LVAD support occurs in only 1-3% of patients. Assessment for recovery and LVAD removal is desirable given the risks of infection, stroke, and device malfunction. This case of a patient with an LVAD, with recovered LV systolic function but abnormal exercise hemodynamics, illustrates the potential utility of right heart catheterization studies for clinical decisions.

Pulmonary Vascular Resistances among Heart Transplant Candidates: Are We Looking to the Right Player?
Pulmonary vascular resistances (PVR) are among the key measurements derived from right heart catheterization (RHC) in the prognostic assessment of patients (pts) candidate to Heart Transplantation (HT). PVR however don't account for compliance and pulsatility of pulmonary circulation. Pulmonary arterial compliance (PAC) [stroke volume/pulmonary artery pulse pressure (SV/PAPP)], that is inversely related to PVR, and pulmonary effective arterial elastance (Ea) (sPAP/SV) incorporate compliance and pulsatility of right ventricular afterload.

Cardiac CT Provides Complementary Parameters of Right Ventricle Function in LVAD Patients
Patients receiving LVADs are at risk for post-operative right ventricular (RV) failure. Cardiac CT angiography (CTA) provides 3D isotropic spatial resolution and blood pool-myocardial delineation and can be used to assess ventricular volumes. We sought to evaluate whether right heart catheterization (RHC) and echocardiographic (echo) parameters of RV structure and function correlate with CT-derived parameters - specifically, RV ejection fraction RVEF, RV stroke volume index RVSVI, RV to LV end diastolic ratio RV-LVEDR, and RV end diastolic volume index RVEDVI.

RVOT-VTI/PASP Is a Novel Noninvasive Parameter of Pulmonary Artery Compliance and Improves After Treatment with Pulmonary Hypertension-Specific Therapy
Pulmonary artery compliance (PAC) is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). We have previously shown that the ratio of echocardiography derived right ventricular outflow tract velocity time integral (RVOT-VTI; an estimate of stroke volume) to pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) correlates with PAC measured by right heart catheterization. We sought to determine whether PH-specific therapy improves PAC in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
