Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Lung Transplant Recipients with and without Concomitant Modified Maze
Atrial fibrillation is common following lung transplantation and may contribute to increased risk of stroke. The goal of this study was to characterize the incidence of atrial fibrillation in lung transplant recipients with and without a concomitant modified Maze procedure.

Protein Biomarkers Predict Risk of Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Left Ventricular Assist Device Patients
This study aims to assess the validity of these biomarkers in predicting the incidence of stroke or GIB in LVAD recipients.

Left Atrial Volume after Heart Transplantation - A Predictor of Outcomes?
The left atrium (LA) in heart transplant (HT) recipients is a surgically created chamber from variable portions of donor and recipient. In the non-HT patients there is strong evidence that left atrial volume (LAV) is a robust predictor of cardiovascular outcomes such as atrial fibrillation, stroke, heart failure and cardiovascular death. Thus, we thought to 1) characterize LA size in HT recipients and 2) investigate the implications of “new” LA volume on HT outcomes.

Peak Left Atrial Appendage Emptying Velocity Remains Reduced in Atrial Fibrillation during Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Support
Although regions of stasis such as the left atrial appendage (LAA) may be potential sites of thrombus formation during atrial fibrillation (AF), its thrombotic contribution during high flow mechanical unloading is unknown. Moreover, registry studies only show a mixed association of AF and stroke during continuous flow left ventricular assist device (CF LVAD) support. Since a lower peak Left Atrial Appendage Emptying Velocity (LAAEV) of less than 40 cm/s during AF, mechanistically contributes to thrombosis and stroke in non-CF LVAD populations, we sought to evaluate the LAAEV in CF LVAD patients with and without AF.

Novel Oral Anticoagulants in Patients with Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
The gold standard for anticoagulation in patients with continuous flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVADs) is warfarin. However, many patients fail warfarin therapy due to thromboembolic and bleeding events. Warfarin requires regular monitoring and dosage adjustments, and is associated with significant patient time outside recommended therapeutic INR range. Novel oral anticoagulation (NOAC) has been shown to be non-inferior compared to warfarin in stroke prevention with less intracranial hemorrhage in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Surgical occlusion of the left atrial appendage and thromboembolic complications in patients with left ventricular assist devices
Thromboembolic complications (TECs) are major adverse events for patients supported by left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Despite anti-coagulation, TECs such as stroke or pump thrombosis occur in 6.5% of patients.1 Risk of TECs increases with longer duration of device support, and the risk is likely greater in patients receiving LVADs as destination therapy. Surgical or percutaneous occlusion of the left atrial appendage (LAA) reduces TECs in patients with atrial fibrillation.2,3 The LAA may also be a source of thromboembolism for patients with systolic heart failure, including patients in sinus rhythm.

Surgical occlusion of the left atrial appendage and thromboembolic complications in left ventricular assist device patients
Thromboembolic complications (TEC) are major adverse events for patients supported by left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Despite anticoagulation, TEC such as stroke or pump thrombosis still occur in 6.5% of patients.1 Risk of TEC increases with longer duration of device support and is likely a greater risk in destination therapy patients. Surgical or percutaneous occlusion of the left atrial appendage (LAAO) reduces TEC in patients with atrial fibrillation.2,3 The LAA may also be a source of thromboembolism for systolic heart failure patients, even in sinus rhythm.

CHA2DS2-Vasc and HAS-BLED Scores as Predictors of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke Risk After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation
CHA2DS2-VASc score predicts thromboembolic event risk and HAS-BLED score predicts major bleeding risk in patients on anticoagulation with atrial fibrillation. We aimed to evaluate if these scoring systems would be predictive of ischemic stroke and intracranial bleeding complications following continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD) implantation.

Effect of Preoperative Atrial Fibrillation on Clinical Outcomes After Continuous Flow-Left Ventricular Assist Device Therapy
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common chronic cardiac arrhythmia, often found in patients with heart failure requiring a ventricular assist device. Our goal was to assess the effect of preoperative AF on the risk of thromboembolic (TE) events (hemolysis, stroke and/or TIA), clinical outcomes and survival in patients receiving a continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD).
