Computed tomography versus short sequence magnetic resonance imaging in acute ischaemic stroke
It is undisputable that the acute management of stroke requires a fast and accurate diagnostic imaging modality. We read with interest and congratulate Kumar et al. on their article discussing the superiority and benefits of the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) [1]. The authors suggest that MRI can improve the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT) negative AIS and allow better selection of patients for reperfusion therapies. Moreover, MRI may help avoid hospital admissions for patients with stroke mimics, facilitate earlier discharge, reduce overall hospital costs and play a...

Risk of readmission and mortality in patients with ischaemic stroke
Morton et al. conducted a 1-year follow-up study to evaluate the risk of readmission to hospital and all-cause mortality in patients with ischaemic stroke (IS) [1]. The cumulative incidence of all-cause readmission was 56.1%, and the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence intervals [CI]) of patients with diabetes for all-cause, cardiovascular, and IS readmission were 1.13 (1.09 –1.17), 1.14 (1.07–1.21), and 1.17 (1.06–1.29). One-year mortality also increased significantly in patients with diabetes, and IS readmission and mortality were higher in women than those in men.

Prevalence of stroke in acute vertigo presentations: A UK tertiary stroke centre perspective
The reported prevalence of stroke amongst patients presenting to hospital with acute vertigo and/or imbalance is c. 5%, leading to the pervasive notion amongst emergency and stroke physicians, that stroke is uncommon in this cohort. To interrogate the veracity of this notion, we systematically and retrospectively screened the electronic care records in our institution of patients referred as suspected stroke, to a hyperacute stroke service at a large tertiary referral centre. We screened 24,310 consecutive patients' electronic case records presenting to our hospital as an emergency over a 4-month period, 332 of whom were ref...

Impact of prior antiplatelet therapy on outcomes of endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion: Sub-analysis of the RESCUE-Japan Registry 2
The impact of prior antiplatelet therapy (APT) on clinical outcomes of endovascular therapy (EVT) for large vessel occlusion (LVO) on clinical outcomes is uncertain. We explored the associations between prior APT and in-hospital and 90-day outcomes in a real-world setting.

Predictors of in-hospital and 90-day post-discharge stroke mortality in Lusaka, Zambia
Factors associated with stroke mortality are understudied in sub-Saharan Africa but have implications for designing interventions that improve stroke outcomes. We investigated predictors of in-hospital and 90-day post-discharge stroke mortality in Lusaka, Zambia.

One-year readmission and mortality following ischaemic stroke by diabetes status, sex, and socioeconomic disadvantage: An analysis of 27,802 strokes from 2012 to 2017
We estimated the 1-year incidence of readmission to hospital and 1-year all-cause mortality following ischaemic stroke (IS), by diabetes status, sex, and socioeconomic disadvantage.

Low-dose tirofiban is associated with reduced in-hospital mortality in cardioembolic stroke patients treated with endovascular thrombectomy
Whether tirofiban is safe and effective in cardioembolic stroke patients treated with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) remains unknown; this study evaluated the safety and efficacy of low-dose tirofiban in this patients population.

Risk factors and outcomes of hospitalized stroke patients in Lusaka, Zambia
Limited data exists about stroke risk factors and outcomes in sub-Saharan African countries, including Zambia. We aim to fill this gap by describing features of hospitalized stroke patients at University Teaching Hospital (UTH), the national referral hospital in Lusaka, Zambia.

Impact of pulmonary embolism on in-hospital mortality of patients with ischemic stroke
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a frequent complication in immobile stroke patients and an important cause of death in stroke patients. We aimed to investigate predictors of PE and impact of PE on survival of ischemic stroke patients.

The potential impact of enhanced hygienic measures during the COVID-19 outbreak on hospital-acquired infections: A pragmatic study in neurological units
This study aimed to investigate if enhanced hygienic measures, including the systematic use of personal protective equipment (PPE), determined a decrease in HAI during the recent COVID-19 outbreak in “COVID-free” neurological units.

COVID-19 AND STROKE: Experience in a GHANAIAN healthcare system
Background:The novel coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) causes multi-system disease including possibly heightened stroke risk. Data from high-income countries (HIC) suggest disruptions to care delivery with reduced stroke admissions and administration of acute stroke reperfusion therapies. We are unaware of any published data on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stroke admissions and outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa.Purpose: To compare rates of stroke admissions and case fatality between corresponding periods in 2020 and 2019, within a hospital system in Ghana, to assess the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prevalence and predictors of statin utilization among patient populations at high vascular risk in Ghana
Inadequate implementation of evidence-based preventive measures for individuals at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) will only worsen the current epidemic of CVDs in sub-Saharan Africa. We assessed rates and predictors of statin utilization among two high CVD risk patient populations, people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and those with stroke, encountered across five hospitals in Ghana.
