Ischemic Stroke Transfer Patterns in the Northeast United States
Little is known about how hospitals are connected in the transfer of ischemic stroke (IS) patients. We aimed to describe differences in characteristics of transferred versus nontransferred patients and between transferring and receiving hospitals in the Northeastern United States, and to describe changes over time.

Readmissions After Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke in the United States: A Nationwide Analysis
Mechanical thrombectomy after acute ischemic stroke has been shown to improve clinical outcomes. Data on short-term hospitalization outcomes after thrombectomy are needed. Our objective was to quantify 30- and 90-day readmissions after thrombectomy and identify factors associated with readmissions.

Racial Difference in Cerebral Microbleed Burden Among a Patient Population in the Mid-South United States
Although intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is more common among African-Americans, data on the burden of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) among different races is limited. The purpose of this study is to compare the number, associated factors, and topography of CMBs between African-American and Caucasian populations in the Mid-South United States.

Postapproval Community Hospital Experience in the United States with Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device (Watchman)
To review the procedural safety and postimplantation complications of Watchman device implanted at 2 community hospitals for primary prevention of systemic embolization in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) who were not candidates for long-term oral anticoagulation (OAC).

Blood Pressure Management after Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Survey of the StrokeNet Sites
It is unclear what factors providers take into account to determine the target blood pressure (BP) after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in patients who had acute ischemic stroke. We aimed to understand practice patterns of post-MT BP management across institutions in the United States.

The Risk of Hemorrhagic Transformation After Thrombolysis for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Chinese Versus North Americans: A Comparative Study
This study aims to compare the incidence of symptomatic hemorrhagic transformation (SHT) among thrombolysis-treated AIS patients in China and in the United States.

Hemicraniectomy for Malignant Middle Cerebral Artery Syndrome: A Review of Functional Outcomes in Two High-Volume Stroke Centers
Despite recent landmark randomized controlled trials showing significant benefits for hemicraniectomy (HCT) compared with medical therapy (MT) in patients with malignant middle cerebral artery infarction (MMCAI), HCT rates have not substantially increased in the United States. We sought to evaluate early outcomes in patients with MMCAI who were treated with HCT (cases) in comparison to patients treated with MT due to the perception of procedural futility by families (controls).

Health Behaviors among Stroke Survivors in the United States: A Propensity Score-Matched Study
The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has specific recommendations for secondary stroke prevention. The aim of this study was to compare health behaviors engagement between stroke survivors and propensity score-matched controls.

Impact of Stroke Call on the Stroke Neurology Workforce in the United States: Possible Challenges and Opportunities
The Stroke& Vascular Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology was charged to identify challenges to the recruitment and retention of stroke neurologists and to make recommendations to address any identified problems. The Section initiated this effort by determining the impact of stroke on-call requirements as a barrier to the recruitment and retention of vascular neurologists.

Time Trends and Characteristics of Prevalent Dementia among Patients Hospitalized for Stroke in the United States
Little is known about how prevalent dementia rates among patients with stroke have evolved over the last decade or how this relationship varies by gender, race ethnicity, stroke type, or dementia type. We assessed time trends and demographic predictors of coexisting dementia in a large cohort of patients hospitalized for stroke.

Treatment with Uric Acid Reduces Infarct and Improves Neurologic Function in Female Mice After Transient Cerebral Ischemia
Exogenous administration of uric acid, a naturally occurring antioxidant that scavenges reactive oxygen species in vasculature, has shown protective efficacy in both rodent models of stroke and human stroke patients in Spain as an adjuvant treatment to mechanical thrombectomy. Before clinical trials can be initiated in the United States, however, confirmation of efficacy in alternative preclinical models is required in accordance with stroke therapy academic industry roundtable-RIGOR criteria. To date, preclinical efficacy has only been established in the acute setting in male rodents.
