Prevalence and Predictors of Multivitamin Supplement Use After Stroke in Ghana
Multivitamin supplementation is widely practiced in high-income countries due to a popular belief of its health promotion and disease prevention benefits. Evidence for their purported efficacy has been mixed. Regarding the efficacy of multivitamins on prevention of cardiovascular disease, cancer, or all-cause mortality, some studies have shown no effect,1 –4 harmful effects,5,6 and beneficial effects.7,8 Three prospective studies have evaluated the effect of multivitamin use on stroke prevention with two showing negative outcomes3,5 and the third among 72,000 Japanese showing frequent use of multivitamins was associated ...

Clinical Outcomes and Medical Costs of Hydration Therapy with Hydroxyethyl Starch (130/0.4) or Acute Single Infarction
Although a single infarction (SI) is typically predicted to have good outcomes, 20% –30% of SI patients experience secondary progressive motor deficits (PMD) occurring within a few days after SI onset, which often leads to severe disabilities.1 This disease type in lenticulostriate artery (LSA) is well known as branch atheromatous disease (BAD) in Japan.2 Neither evidence nor con sensus-based indications exist about how to prevent PMD2. Vascular risk factors, such as elevated haemoglobin A1c and blood pressure levels, as well as the characteristics of ischemic lesions, such as the size and location of the infarction, esp...

A Nationwide Multi-Center Questionnaire Survey on the Real-World State and Issues Regarding Post-Stroke Complications in Japan
Post-stroke complications affect stroke survivors across the world, although data on them are limited. We conducted a questionnaire survey to examine the real-world state and issues regarding post-stroke complications in Japan, which represents a super-aged society.

Relationship Between Acute Neurological Function and Long-Term Prognosis in Patients with Large Arterial Occlusions
To clarify the relationship between early neurological symptoms and long-term functional outcomes of acute ischemic stroke, which would be beneficial for patient management and determining clinical study criteria of novel therapeutic interventions.

Reproducible Presyncope Due to Osteophyte Compression Into Transverse Foramen of the C5 Vertebra
Beauty parlor stroke syndrome is characterized by the development of various neurological symptoms during cervical hyperextension, followed by inadequate blood flow through the posterior circulation of the brain. However, there are few reports of beauty parlor stroke syndrome wherein the cause of the posterior circulatory inadequacy has been directly identified. Here we report a case where we could directly detect the origin of the posterior circulatory inadequacy. A 76-year-old Japanese man with hypertension presented with presyncope following cervical retroflexion.

Reliability of the Modified Rankin Scale Assessment Using a Simplified Questionnaire in Japanese
We developed a Japanese version of the simplified modified Rankin Scale questionnaire, of which the agreement between patients or their family members and neurologists was verified in a previous single-center study. In the present study, the reliability of the questionnaire was evaluated in another hospital.

Factors Influencing Sitting Ability During the Acute Post-Stroke Phase: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study in Japan
Stroke is the second leading cause of both death and disability worldwide.1 In Japan, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death2 and the second leading cause of being bedridden3 due to residual neurological and neuropsychological disorders. Long-term prognoses for stroke patients can be improved through acute stroke rehabilitation.4 Therefore, appropriate rehabilitation and mobilization at an early stage are necessary to improve functional prognoses after stroke.

Recurrent Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Treated with Direct Oral Anticoagulants in a Japanese Man with Hereditary Protein C Deficiency
We herein report a case involving a 32-year-old Japanese man with recurrent cerebral venous thrombosis due to hereditary protein C deficiency. He was admitted to our hospital with impaired consciousness. Brain magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated high intensities diffusely along the bilateral sulci and magnetic resonance venography revealed left transverse sinus and superior sagittal sinus stenoses. His father had a history of cerebral infarction and venous thrombosis. The protein C activity level examined by chromogenic synthetic substrate assay was markedly reduced.

Expanded Indication for Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator from 3 to 4.5 h after Onset of Stroke in Japan
We examined the impact of expansion of the time window (from 3 to 4.5 hours) in the labeled indication for recombinant tissue-plasminogen activator (rt-PA) in August 2012 on the use of rt-PA for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and the outcomes of patients treated with rt-PA.

Stroke Systems of Care during the COVID-19 Epidemic in Kobe City
The novel coronavirus disease 2019  (COVID-19), first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, spread worldwide in 2020. As of June 1, 2020, the estimated number of global cases and deaths has exceeded 6 million and 370,000, respectively.1 In Japan, the number of reported cases increased sharply in March 2020, with community tran smission presenting at the highest rate in urban areas, leading to a state of emergency being declared by the Japanese government on April 7. Subsequently, on April 9, the Japan Stroke Society and the Japanese Circulation Society issued a joint statement on the importance of maintaining high-q...

Treatment Outcomes by Initial Neurological Deficits in Acute Stroke Patients with Basilar Artery Occlusion: The RESCUE Japan Registry 2
We hypothesized that the relationships between treatments and outcomes in acute basilar artery occlusion (BAO) are different, depending on the severity of initial neurological deficits.

Prognostic evaluation of branch atheromatous disease in the pons using carotid artery ultrasonography
In the 2017 fiscal year, stroke was the 3rd leading cause of death in Japan, after malignant neoplasms and heart diseases, according to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan.1 The most common type of stroke is ischemic stroke, and a large-scale epidemiologic survey on ischemic stroke in Japan, conducted from 1999 to 2000, found that, within this category, lacunar infarcts were the most common (36%), followed by atherothrombotic infarcts (31%), cardioembolic infarcts (20%), and undifferentiated types of ischemic stroke (6%).

Outcome and effect of endovascular treatment in stroke associated with acute extracranial internal carotid artery occlusion: Single-center experience in Japan
Positive data from several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of endovascular treatment (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (ACLVO) have emerged. However, little evidence exists on EVT for acute extracranial internal carotid artery (EC-ICA) occlusion. We therefore analysed the outcome and effect of EVT on AIS due to ACLVO caused by EC-ICA occlusion, including tandem occlusion compared with that caused by pure intracranial artery occlusion.
