Stroke Risk Following Infection in Patients with Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device
ConclusionsLVAD infections, particularly BSI, are significantly associated with stroke, and infection-related stroke conferred significantly lower cumulative survival.

Decompressive Hemicraniectomy in Elderly Patients With Space-Occupying Infarction (DECAP): A Prospective Observational Study
ConclusionsIn this single-center cohort of elderly patients with space-occupying MCA infarction and decompressive hemicraniectomy, the probability for survival without severe disability was low. Lethality at 6 and 12  months was comparable to previously reported data from a randomized trial.

Early Manipulation of Arterial Blood Pressure in Acute Ischemic Stroke (MAPAS): Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionsGood outcome in 90  days was not significantly different among the 3 blood pressure ranges. After logistic regression analysis, the odds of having good outcome was greater in Group 2 (SBP 161–180 mmHg). SICH occurred more frequently in Group 3 (181–200 mmHg).

Preventing Chronic Emotional Distress in Stroke Survivors and Their Informal Caregivers
ConclusionsThe challenges and impacts of stroke most commonly reported by dyads were: uncertainty about future health, fear of recurrent strokes, negative emotions, and role changes post-stroke. Dyads and nurses agreed that resiliency skills such as mindfulness/focusing on the present, problem solving, gratitude/optimism, self-care, interpersonal communication and developing a supportive team of family, friends, and medical staff are beneficial to optimize recovery. The potential barrier to intervention delivery was accessibility, due to challenges of time and travel to appointments. Participants agreed that starting the i...

The Full Outline of UnResponsiveness (FOUR) Score and Its Use in Outcome Prediction: A Scoping Systematic Review of the Adult Literature
ConclusionsThe FOUR score has been shown to be a useful outcome predictor in many patients with depressed level of consciousness. It displays good inter-rater reliability among physicians and nurses.

External Validation of Hematoma Expansion Scores in Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage in an Asian Patient Cohort
ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first study to validate HE scores, namely PREDICT, 9-Point and BRAIN, in a multi-ethnic Asian ICH patient population. The PREDICT score was the best performing model in our study cohort, based on the performance metrics employed in this study. Our findings also showed support for CT angiography spot sign as a predictor of outcome after ICH. Although the models assessed are sufficient for risk stratification, the discrimination and calibration are at best moderate and could be improved.

Dehydration Status Predicts Short-Term and Long-Term Outcomes in Patients with Cerebral Venous Thrombosis
ConclusionsThe present findings indicate that dehydration is an independent predictor for short-term and long-term unfavorable functional outcome in patients with CVT.

Predictors for Tracheostomy with External Validation of the Stroke-Related Early Tracheostomy Score (SETscore)
ConclusionsSETscore is a simple score with a moderate accuracy and with a fair AUC used to predict the need for TR after MV for IS, ICH, and SAH patients. Our study also demonstrates that early TR was associated with a lower ICU LOS and VD in our cohort. The utility of this score may be improved when including additional variables such as BMI, AA race, ICH, and positive sputum cultures.

The Risk of Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy in Acute Neurological Disease
ConclusionTCM appears to be associated with varying degrees with several acute neurological diseases besides subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Attitudes of Nurses Toward Disability and Treatment in Space-Occupying Middle Cerebral Artery Stroke
ConclusionMost German nurses indicate moderately severe disability after SOS not to be acceptable, without emphasizing the presence of aphasia. The results call for greater scientific efforts in order to find reliable predictors for outcome after SOS.

Long-Term Outcomes in Patients with Anemia And Cerebral Venous Thrombosis
ConclusionsAnemia was a significant and independent predictor of unfavorable functional outcome in patients with CVT.

The Role of Serum Calcium Level in Intracerebral Hemorrhage Hematoma Expansion: Is There Any?
AbstractSpontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating form of stroke, with a high rate of mortality and morbidity. Even with the best current medical or surgical interventions, outcomes remain poor. The location and initial hematoma volume are strong predictors of mortality. Hematoma expansion (HE) is a further marker of poor prognosis that may be at least partly preventable. Several risk factors for HE have been identified, including baseline ICH volume, anticoagulation, and computed tomography angiography spot signs. Recent studies have shown the correlation of serum calcium (Ca++) levels on admission with ...

Effects of Diabetes Mellitus and Admission Glucose in Patients Receiving Mechanical Thrombectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe present study confirms that a history of diabetes mellitus and high AGL are associated with unfavorable functional outcomes at 3  months after MT in AIS patients. However, the causal relationship between hyperglycemia and poor prognosis remains undetermined, and further investigations are required to ascertain whether AIS patients receiving MT could benefit from intensive glucose control.

Cerebrovascular Events After Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
ConclusionsLVADs are associated with high rates of CVE, increased mortality, and lower rates of heart transplantation. Further investigations to identify the optimal primary and secondary stroke prevention measures in post-LVAD patients are warranted.

Fever Burden and Health-Related Quality of Life After Intracerebral Hemorrhage
ConclusionsEach additional day with a fever was predictive of worse HRQoL domains of Cognitive Function and Mobility after ICH up to 1  year. These data extend previous evidence on the negative association of fever and functional outcomes to the domains of Cognitive Function and Mobility HRQoL. HRQoL outcomes may be a sensitive and powerful way to measure the efficacy of fever control in future research.
