Comparative Analysis of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors Influencing Nonfatal Acute Coronary Syndrome and Ischemic Stroke
The aim of the present work was to compare the influence of classic cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors on the development of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and ischemic stroke. During 2009–2010, 1,000 participants were enrolled: 250 were consecutive patients with a first ACS, 250 were consecutive patients with a first ischemic stroke, and 500 were population-based, control subjects, 1-for-1 matched to the patients by age and gender. Predictors of Stroke Associated with Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus and Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease
This study assesses demographic and clinical variables associated with perioperative and late stroke in diabetes mellitus patients following multivessel coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). FREEDOM is the largest randomized trial of diabetic patients undergoing multivessel CABG. FREEDOM patients had improved survival free of death, myocardial infarction or stroke and increased overall survival following CABG compared to percutaneous intervention (PCI). However, the stroke rate was greater following CABG than PCI.

Relation of Hemoglobin A1C Levels to Risk of Ischemic Stroke and Mortality in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus and Atrial Fibrillation
This study aimed to assess the incidence and risks of ischemic stroke and mortality according to baseline HbA1c levels in patients with DM and AF. We conducted a cohort study using Clalit Health Services electronic medical records. Anticoagulant Agents for Atrial Fibrillation in Cancer Patients
In a recent article in the journal, Patell et  al1 found CHADS2 (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥ 75, diabetes mellitus, prior stroke/transient ischemic attack/thromboembolism) and CHA2DS2VASC (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥ 75, diabetes mellitus, prior stroke/transient ischemic attack/thromboembolism, vascular disease, age 65-74, sex category [i.e., female]) to predict risk of ischemic stroke in cancer patients with baseline atrial fibrillation (AF). Although only 36% of patients received anticoagulant therapy, the risk of stroke generally appeared to be lower than in cancer-free individuals.

Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure: A Bad Combination
Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) commonly coexist and share similar risk factors such as hypertension, increasing age, valvular heart disease, previous ischemic cardiac event, and diabetes mellitus. Individually, AF and HF increase the risk of stroke and death, and the synergistic combination of AF and HF creates a prothrombotic state that results in worse stroke morbidity and mortality than the mere presence of either condition separately.

Effect of Addition of a Statin to Warfarin on Thromboembolic Events in Japanese Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation and Diabetes Mellitus
Statins have been shown to decrease stroke risk in patients with cardiovascular risk factors, but not to prevent recurrence of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The present subanalysis aimed to clarify the efficacy of combined use of warfarin and statins in nonvalvular AF (NVAF) patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), diabetes mellitus (DM) or hypertension. The effects of adding statins to warfarin were compared with those of warfarin alone in NVAF patients with the data set of J-RHYTHM Registry, a prospective, observational study with a 2-year follow-up.

Renal Impairment in a “Real-Life” Cohort of Anticoagulated Patients With Atrial Fibrillation (Implications for Thromboembolism and Bleeding)
In conclusion, the presence of impaired renal function was closely related to thrombotic/vascular events, bleeding, and mortality in anticoagulated patients with AF. During follow-up, 1/5 of the patients had significant impairment in renal function. Importantly, normal or mild renal dysfunction at baseline did not exclude the subsequent development of severe renal dysfunction during the follow-up period.

In conclusion, in patients with established coronary artery disease, the risk of cardiovascular mortality during longer term follow-up can be adequately predicted using the clinical characteristics available at baseline. However, the prediction of nonfatal outcomes, both separately and combined with fatal outcomes, poses major challenges for clinicians and model developers.

In conclusion, 1/3 of patients with acute coronary syndromes who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention and stenting showed high on-treatment RPR on bedside monitoring. Comparison of Statin Alone Versus Bezafibrate and Statin Combination in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus and Acute Coronary Syndrome
In conclusion, a significantly lower risk for 30-day MACEs was observed in statin-treated patients with DM who also received bezafibrate after ACS. Signals regarding improvement of 30-day rehospitalization and 1-year mortality rates emerged as well.
