Hypertension, remnant cholesterol and cardiovascular disease: evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study
Conclusion: Our study indicated that there was a combined effect of hypertension and RC on the risk of CVD, stroke and cardiac events. Larger-sample prospective cohort studies are still required to test the potential application of combination of hypertension and RC as a screening method to identify individuals at risk of CVD.

Changes in blood pressure and cardiovascular disease in middle-aged to older Chinese: the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study
Conclusion: Most people between 50 and 70 years of age and not taking antihypertensive medication maintained a slow increase SBP trajectory over a follow-up period of approximately 7 years. However, those whose SBPs increased from low and moderate levels were associated with higher CVD risks.

Complementary value of ECG and echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy for prediction of adverse outcomes in the general population
Conclusion: Our study provides strong evidence that ECG-LVH is associated with adverse outcomes, independent of Echo-LVH. Clinically, ECG-LVH could be considered as a consequential factor, especially in those with Echo-LVH. These findings have potential clinical relevance for risk stratification.

Combined effect of high depressive symptom burden and hypertension on new-onset stroke: evidence from a nationwide prospective cohort study
Conclusion: Our results suggest a combined effect of high depressive symptom burden and hypertension on stroke risk among the middle-aged and elderly Chinese.

Epidemiological characteristics and related factors of frailty in older Chinese adults with hypertension: a population-based study
Conclusion: The current study provides the first evidence regarding the status of frailty in older Chinese adults with hypertension.

Positive relationship of hypertensive retinopathy with carotid intima--media thickness in hypertensive patients
Objectives: We aimed to explore the relationship of hypertensive retinopathy with carotid intima--media thickness (CIMT), and to examine the possible effect modifiers in Chinese adults with hypertension. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 12 342 hypertensive patients with complete exit site visit data from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. CIMT was measured by carotid ultrasonography. Hypertensive retinopathy was diagnosed according to the Keith--Wagener--Barker classification. Results: The mean (SD) CIMT among study participants was 739.9 (111.4) μm. Compared with patients with grade 1 hy...

The association of outdoor temperature with blood pressure, and its influence on future cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk in cold areas
Conclusion: Temperature-driven blood pressure potentially mediates the association between outdoor temperature and cardio-cerebrovascular events risk. Indoor heating in winter is probably beneficial to cardio-cerebrovascular disease prevention by inhibition of blood pressure increase.

Association of visit-to-visit variability in blood pressure and first stroke risk in hypertensive patients with chronic kidney disease
Conclusion: In hypertensive adults with mild-to-moderate CKD, visit-to-visit variability in BP was significantly associated with the risk of subsequent first stroke.

Associations of blood pressure categories according to the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association hypertension guideline and long-term blood pressure change with incident cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and elderly Chinese: the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort study
Objective: To assess the associations of newly defined blood pressure (BP) categories by the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guideline and changes in BP with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among the middle-aged and older Chinese. Methods: Among 29 086 participants aged 61.6 years from the Dongfeng-Tongji (DFTJ) cohort, we estimated the hazard ratio for CVD using Cox proportional hazard models. Results: As BP increased, we found a significant trend for greater risk of incident CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD) or stroke. Compared with the BP

Association of general and central adiposity with blood pressure among Chinese adults: results from the China National Stroke Prevention Project
Background: The American Heart Association concluded that waist circumference was a better predictor of blood pressure risk than BMI in Asians. However, data are inconsistent and information in Chinese, the largest global population group, is limited. Methods: Data was obtained from the Chinese National Stroke Prevention Project Survey of a nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older Chinese adults. A total of 135 825 individuals not taking any antihypertensive drugs were included in this study. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between blood pressure and par...

BMI is associated with the development of chronic kidney diseases in hypertensive patients with normal renal function
Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship of BMI and waist circumference with the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: A total of 12 672 hypertensive patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at least 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 from the renal sub-study of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT) were included. The primary outcome was the development of CKD, defined as a decrease in eGFR of at least 30% and to a level of less than 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 at the exit visit, or end-stage renal disease. A secondary outcome was rapid renal function decline, defined as ...

High SBP trajectories are associated with risk of all-cause death in general Chinese population
Conclusion: High SBP trajectories are independent risk factors for all-cause death. Our findings suggest increasing SBP trajectories within the currently designated ‘normal’ range may still increase risk of all-cause death.

Effect of total, domain-specific, and intensity-specific physical activity on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among hypertensive adults in China
Objectives: We aimed to prospectively examine the associations of total, domain-specific, and intensity-specific physical activity with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among Chinese hypertensive adults. Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study in 150 391 hypertensive participants aged 30–79 years from the China Kadoorie Biobank study of 512 891 participants recruited from 10 diverse areas across China during 2004–2008. Participants with heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer at baseline were excluded. Results: During 1069 863 person-years of follow-up (medi...

Brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity compared with mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure in risk stratification in a Chinese population
Conclusion: With fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular and cerebrovascular endpoints as outcome, baPWV marginally increases risk stratification over and beyond MAP, but is a better predictor than PP. A threshold of 16.7 m/s might be used in Chinese populations.

Early life exposure to Chinese famine modifies the association between hypertension and cardiovascular disease
Objective: Studies have shown that famine exposure during early life may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, and diabetes during adulthood. We aimed to assess whether exposure to the Chinese famine (1959–1961) modifies the association between hypertension and CVD. Methods: We investigated data of 5772 adults born between 1954 and 1964 from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. CVD was based on self-reported doctor's diagnosis of heart problems (heart attack, coronary heart disease, angina, congestive heart failure, or other heart problems) and stroke. Results: Overall, h...
