Familial hypercholesterolaemia in patients with ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack
ConclusionsThe frequency of potential FH, based on clinical criteria, in patients with acute ischaemic stroke or TIA was 11.5% and that of probable/definite FH (1.3%) was similar to recently reported counts for patients with acute coronary syndrome (1.6%). FH screening using the DLCNA is feasible in clinical routine and should be considered as part of the usual diagnostic work‐up.

The risk of ischaemic stroke in primary antiphospholipid syndrome patients: a prospective study
ConclusionsPatients with PAPS, including young patients, have a high risk of recurrent thrombosis despite anticoagulation treatment. A careful risk assessment is mandatory to identify patients at risk for recurrence.

Triglyceride to high ‐density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio predicts worse outcomes after acute ischaemic stroke
ConclusionsA lower TG/HDL‐C was independently associated with death and worse outcome at 3 months in AIS.

Serum 25 ‐hydroxyvitamin D deficiency predicts poor outcome amongst acute ischaemic stroke patients with low high density lipoprotein cholesterol
ConclusionsVitamin D deficiency may be merely an independent risk factor of poor prognosis in ischaemic stroke patients with low HDLC level.

Progranulin and short‐term outcome in patients with acute ischaemic stroke
ConclusionsSerum PGRN levels independently predicted all‐cause mortality and adverse functional outcome in the short term in stroke patients. The discriminative power was improved by PGRN on the basis of NIHSS score.

Early statin therapy in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage without prior statin use
ConclusionsEarly statin group patients with acute ICH did not have a higher recurrent risk of ICH and might have lower all‐cause mortality during follow‐up. It is concluded that statin therapy might be beneficial for patients with ICH.

Cryptogenic stroke
In about a quarter of ischaemic strokes the cause is undetermined, because the investigation is incomplete or delayed, because there are multiple causes or because the stroke is truly cryptogenic. Cryptogenic stroke can be further classified as non‐embolic or embolic. Embolic stroke of undetermined source can be due to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, minor emboligenic cardiac conditions, atheroembolism, cancer associated and paradoxical embolism through a patent foramen ovale (PFO) or less often a pulmonary fistula. Currently, risk factor control, statins and antiplatelets are the main therapeutic measures to prevent rec...

Early‐onset Alzheimer's disease: a global cross‐sectional analysis
ConclusionEarly‐onset Alzheimer's disease is found more frequently in Native American Indians, Alaskans, Hawaiians and other minorities, including Hispanics; patients with EOAD have more anxiety or depression. EOAD occurs independently of hypertension, stroke and atrial fibrillation.

Apolipoprotein E polymorphisms and ischaemic stroke: a two‐center Greek study
ConclusionsOur study was indicative of a protective role of the ε3/ε3 genotype, especially in female patients. However, risk factors such as age, BMI, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and smoking have a strong impact on stroke occurrence and outweigh the protective role of the ε3/ε3 genotype.

Ischaemic stroke at a young age is a serious event – final results of a population‐based long‐term follow‐up in Western Norway
ConclusionsOur data show a heterogeneous prognosis and high mortality even for long‐time survivors of ischaemic stroke at a young age. Prospective studies of young stroke patients and controls are necessary for direct comparison.
