Early neurological worsening in acute ischaemic stroke patients
ConclusionsEarly neurological worsening has serious consequences for the short‐term outcome for patients with acute ischaemic stroke and is associated with low body temperature on admission, and with extracranially and intracranially large‐vessel stenosis or occlusion.

Higher ratio of ischemic stroke to hemorrhagic stroke in summer
ConclusionsSeasonal variations differed among stroke subtypes. The OR for CH/CeI and for SAH/CeI was lower in summer and higher in the rest of seasons independent of age, gender, and risk factors.

Stroke treated at a neurosurgical ward: a cohort study
ConclusionsPatients with stroke who were admitted to a neurosurgical ward had a low mortality rate during the acute treatment, and at 4 years post‐stroke, the survival rate was 75%. The level of disability and dependence at discharge was high, but at 4 years post‐stroke, there was both measurable and self‐perceived improvement in function.

APOE and AGT in the Finnish p.Arg133Cys CADASIL population
ConclusionsThe APOE, AGT and NOTCH3 polymorphism did not modify the onset of strokes or migraine in our CADASIL sample, which is one of the largest mutationally homogenous CADASIL populations published to date. International collaboration, pooled analyses and genomewide approaches are warranted to identify the genetic factors that modify the highly variable CADASIL phenotype.

Nocturnal blood pressure dipping in acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsNocturnal BP dipping pattern is not associated with functional outcome at 3 months in acute stroke patients treated with IVrtPA. Hemorrhagic transformation was more frequent in reverse dippers.

Predictors of progression in patients presenting with minor subcortical stroke
ConclusionIn a series of consecutive SS, early neurological worsening was associated with a high vascular risk profile, a larger infarct size and the presence of severe leukoaraiosis. Based on the knowledge that extensive microvascular changes are a feature of severe leukoaraiosis, we hypothesize that stroke progression could be promoted through an impaired compensatory flow in the penumbral area.

Is type 2 diabetes related to leukoaraiosis? an updated review
A significantly increased interest has been dedicated to the study of the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the brain. DM is associated with an increased risk of stroke and cognitive decline. In patients with DM, neuroimaging discloses with high‐frequency structural changes, such as cerebral atrophy, infarcts and white matter lesions, also called leukoaraiosis (LA), an expression of small vessel disease. A previous review showed a relation between DM and both cerebral atrophy and lacunar infarcts, while the question about the relation between DM and LA remained unanswered. In this review, we provide an update on data ...

Clinical predictors of fever in stroke patients: relevance of nasogastric tube
ConclusionsIn patients with acute stroke, four clinical variables were found to be independently associated with the risk of developing fever and, of them, nasogastric tube was the strongest and most significant one.

National registry‐based case–control study: comorbidity and stroke in young adults
ConclusionsIn addition to vascular risk factors, comorbidity (represented by ICD‐10 chapters) was associated with increased risk of stroke in young individuals. The risk of stroke was further increased with the number of diagnosed ICD‐10 chapters.

Lower hazard ratio for death in women with cerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionWe evaluated HR for death comparing men to women in stroke and in each stroke subtype. Women with CH had lower HR for death within 30 days after stroke than men.

Outcome of men and women after atrial fibrillation and stroke
ConclusionsThere were no gender differences in long‐term mortality after stroke related to AF. Men were significantly more often prescribed anticoagulants before stroke, a finding that indicates the need for further studies.

Depression, anxiety, and cognitive functioning after intracerebral hemorrhage
ConclusionsOne of four survivors of ICH at young age suffers long‐term PSD. Higher degree of disability predicted occurrence of PSD. Treatment of depression appears as an unmet need in young ICH survivors.

Recognition of posterior circulation stroke
ConclusionsDespite being of typical age for multiple cardiovascular conditions the PC‐ICH patients less often have a previous history of AF or dyslipidemia than IS patients do. The vomiting PC‐ICH patient with hypertensive BP values often has headache and a red flag for hemorrhage is warfarin treatment.

Strokes in the anterior circulation: comparison between bridging and intravenous thrombolysis
ConclusionsOur results suggest that patients treated with a bridging approach were more likely to have minimal or no deficit at all at 3 months as compared to the IV treated group.

Prevalence of migraine headache in an in‐patient stroke population
ConclusionsThe prevalence of migraine in this hospital‐based stroke cohort was comparable to the estimated prevalence of migraine usually described in population studies. In our study population, the prevalence of migraine with aura was higher than expected. The increased prevalence of PFO in patients with migraine headache corresponds well to previous population studies.
