Burden and cost of neurological diseases: a European North–South comparison
ConclusionsHealth expenditure, YLDs, costs and prevalence of neurological conditions were generally not correlated across the eight countries. A clear North–South gradient was found for health expenditures, and partially for YLDs, costs and diseases' prevalence. We hypothesized that this is a consequence of the expansion of morbidity of neurological conditions connected to ageing, that health and welfare systems of selected countries were not prepared to face.

Correlation of post‐stroke fatigue with glucose, homocysteine and functional disability
ConclusionsThe serum glucose and Hcy levels and functional disability are closely related to fatigue during the acute stage of ischaemic stroke.

Prediction of myocardial infarction in patients with transient ischaemic attack
ConclusionAccording to our results, discrimination was poor for all previous risk prediction models evaluated. Variables such as previous CHD, male sex, DWI and ECG abnormalities should be considered in new prediction models.

Hip fracture after first‐ever stroke: a population‐based study
ConclusionsThese findings imply that osteoporosis may play a major role in the occurrence of hip fracture in the first four years after a first‐ever stroke. Early intervention to prevent bone loss should be regarded as an important part in stroke management, especially in older females, and should be sustained for four years at least. The benefit of antidepressants in stroke patients should be weighed against the increased risk of hip fracture.

RAAS and stress markers in acute ischemic stroke: preliminary findings
ConclusionIncreased epinephrine and cortisol levels in the jugular vein blood may reflect a higher peripheral turnover. The observed changes in RAAS in the acute stroke phase are consistent with responses to increased blood pressure.

Impact of somatic comorbidities on quality of life of patients living with epilepsy in Sagamu, Nigeria
ConclusionSomatic comorbidity is prevalent in this population with significant impact on their quality of life. We emphasize the need to screen for and reduce the numbers of somatic comorbidities in PWE as this can improve their quality of life.

Regional cerebral blood flow following single‐dose and continuous‐dose tadalafil after stroke
ConclusionTadalafil administration after cerebral stroke may be associated with diminished blood flow to areas adjacent to the stroke. The alterations in perfusion suggest a need for caution in prescribing tadalafil to patients with a history of stroke, especially with continuous administration that may impose constant stress on the cerebral circulation.

Arterial stiffness as a risk factor for cerebral aneurysm
ConclusionsThe baPWV was associated with intracranial saccular aneurysms even after adjustment of hypertension and smoking. Assessment of the baPWV may aid the evaluation of the intracranial saccular aneurysm and the development of strategies for screening patients with intracranial saccular aneurysms.

An open‐label evaluator‐blinded clinical study of minocycline neuroprotection in ischemic stroke: gender‐dependent effect
ConclusionPatients with ischemic stroke who received oral minocycline daily for 5 days had significantly better neurological outcomes on day 90 than controls. However, females showed no significant clinical improvement compared to males.

Public stroke awareness and intent to call 112 in Sweden
ConclusionWe confirm a rather low public awareness of stroke in Sweden, poorer among males and those with low education. With increasing age, a lower proportion indicated intent to call 112 for stroke symptoms.

Clinical, familial, and neuroimaging features of CADASIL‐like patients
ConclusionsOur experience highlights the growing number of patients presenting with a high suspicion of a cerebral small vessel disease with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and a phenotype closely similar to that of CADASIL but without NOTCH3 mutations. This group remains to be characterized from the genetic point of view. The role of other genes or NOTCH3 alterations on exons other than 2‐23 or introns has to be further assessed.

Multiple variant type thalamic infarcts: pure and combined types
ConclusionsWe described multiple variant topographic patterns of thalamic infarction with distinct manifestations and etiologies. We thought that multiple variant infarcts are the result of variation in thalamic arterial supply or reflect a source of embolism.

Predicting intracerebral hemorrhage by baseline magnetic resonance imaging in stroke patients undergoing systemic thrombolysis
ConclusionsIn ischemic stroke patients within 3 h from symptom onset, the existence of FLAIR‐positive lesions on pretreatment MRI is significantly associated with an increased bleeding risk due to systemic thrombolysis. Therefore, considering FLAIR‐positive lesions on baseline MRI might guide treatment decisions in ischemic stroke.

Stroke service: How can we improve and measure outcomes? Consensus summary from a global stroke forum
The success of acute stroke treatment is first and foremost time‐dependent, and the need for improvement in acute stroke management is demonstrated by the fact that only a minority of patients gain access to treatment – in particular, intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (IV tPA) – within the necessary time window. Standards of acute stroke care vary widely both regionally and nationally; consequently, various healthcare organizations have undertaken initiatives to measure and improve quality of care. To date, most quality measures have been process‐based, focusing primarily on metrics of patient ca...

Changing clinical patterns and increasing prevalence in CADASIL
ConclusionsCADASIL prevalence is at least 4.6 per 100,000 adults. Median age of first stroke may be older than previously thought. Clinicians should consider CADASIL in the differential diagnosis even in older patients with stroke.
