Yale neurologists identify consistent neuroinflammatory response in ICH patients
(Yale University) Understanding how the immune system responds to acute brain hemorrhage could open doors to identifying treatments for this devastating disease. However, up until now, there has been limited information on inflammation in the brain from human patients, especially during the first days after a hemorrhagic stroke.This led a team of researchers to partner with a large clinical trial of minimally-invasive surgery to tackle defining the human neuroinflammatory response in living patients.

Seventeen genetic abnormalities that cause brain aneurysms

In the framework of the International Stroke Genetics Consortium, a team led by the University of Geneva, the University Hospitals of Geneva and the University of Utrecht has examinated the genome of more than 10,000 people suffering from aneurysms. 17 genetic abnormalities have been identified, notably involved in the functioning of the vascular endothelium.

Researchers report positive results for ReWalk ReStore exosuit in stroke rehabilitation
(Kessler Foundation) The trial determined the safety, reliability, and feasibility of the device in this stroke population. 'We found that the ReStore provided targeted assistance for plantarflexion and dorsiflexion of the paretic ankle, improving the gait pattern,' explained Dr. Nolan, senior research scientist in the Center for Mobility and Rehabilitation Engineering Research at Kessler Foundation. 'This is an important first step toward expanding options for rehabilitative care for the millions of individuals with mobility impairments caused by ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.'

Study ties stroke-related brain blood vessel abnormality to gut bacteria
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) In a nationwide study, NIH funded researchers found that the presence of abnormal bundles of brittle blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord, called cavernous angiomas (CA), are linked to the composition of a person's gut bacteria. Also known as cerebral cavernous malformations, these lesions which contain slow moving or stagnant blood, can often cause hemorrhagic strokes, seizures, or headaches.

Reducing inflammation boosts cognitive recovery after stroke, may extend treatment window
(Medical University of South Carolina) Reperfusion therapy, the gold standard in stroke treatment, returns blood flow to the affected brain area and must be administered within four hours of stroke to minimize hemorrhage risk. Even with successful return of blood flow, full brain function recovery is rare. Medical University of South Carolina researchers have shown in a preclinical stroke model that adding a unique compound to reduce brain inflammation significantly improves cognitive recovery and extends the treatment window.

Immune cells may heal bleeding brain after strokes
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) By studying rodents, researchers showed that instead of attacking germs, some neutrophils may help heal the brain after an intracerebral hemorrhage, a form of stroke caused by ruptured blood vessels. The study suggests that two neutrophil-related proteins may play critical roles in protecting the brain from stroke-induced damage and could be used as treatments for intracerebral hemorrhage.
