Feasibility of a Virtual-Reality-Enabled At-Home Telerehabilitation Program for Stroke Survivors: A Case Study
J Pers Med. 2023 Aug 3;13(8):1230. doi: 10.3390/jpm13081230.ABSTRACTStroke rehabilitation is a lengthy procedure that is necessary for stroke recovery. However, stroke rehabilitation may not be readily available for patients who live rurally due to barriers such as transportation and expenses. This shortage in wearable technology, in turn, causes health disparity among the rural population, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Telerehabilitation (TR) is a potential solution for stroke rehabilitation in rural areas. This one-case study aimed to examine the feasibility and safety of a technology-enabl...

Significant delay and decreased chance of treatment for acute ischemic stroke patients on remote outer islets of China compared with the main island: the PUTUO Study
CONCLUSION: The diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemic stroke patients from OIs was significantly postponed compared to those from MI. Therefore, new effective and efficient solutions are urgently needed.PMID:37280101 | DOI:10.22605/RRH7574

Applying a nutrition security lens to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to address metabolic health
Front Nutr. 2023 Apr 21;10:1141859. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2023.1141859. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTNutrition security - access to food that promotes well-being and prevents or treats disease, particularly among racial and ethnic minority populations, lower income populations, and rural and remote populations - is a national priority. Leading causes of death and disability in America, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes that disproportionately affect minorities are linked to preventable diet-related risk factors. Mounting evidence indicates that adherence to a lower-carbohydrate dietary pattern is associated with ...

Effects of a Province-wide Triaging System for TIA: The ASPIRE Intervention
CONCLUSIONS: The ASPIRE TIA triaging and management interventions did not further reduce stroke recurrence in the context of an organized stroke system. The apparent lower mortality post intervention may be related to improved surveillance following events identified as TIAs but secular trends cannot be excluded.PMID:36977597 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207201

Deploying Digital Health Technologies for Remote Physical Activity Monitoring of Rural Populations With Chronic Neurologic Disease
CONCLUSIONS: A remote physical activity monitoring program for rurally residing individuals with PD or stroke was feasible. This study establishes a model for a scalable physical activity program for rural, older populations with neurologic conditions from a central coordinating site.PMID:36968173 | PMC:PMC10036227 | DOI:10.1016/j.arrct.2022.100250

Reach and Impact of In-Person and Remote Delivery Formats of Walk with Ease
Inquiry. 2023 Jan-Dec;60:469580231152314. doi: 10.1177/00469580231152314.ABSTRACTThis descriptive study retrospectively evaluates the reach and impact of cohorts enrolled in Group (in-person, 2017-2020) and Self-Directed (remote, 2019-2020) delivery formats of the evidenced-based health promotion program, Walk with Ease, implemented statewide in North Carolina. An existing dataset consisting of pre- and post-surveys were analyzed for 1,890 participants; 454 (24%) from the Group format and 1,436 (76%) from Self-Directed. Self-Directed participants were younger, had more years of education, represented more Black/African Ame...

Evaluating remote facilitation intensity for multi-national translation of nurse-initiated stroke protocols (QASC Australasia): a protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial
DISCUSSION: We will generate new evidence on the most effective facilitation intensity to support implementation of nurse-initiated stroke protocols nationwide, reducing geographical barriers for those in rural and remote areas.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ACTRN12622000028707. Cost-effectiveness of remote robotic mechanical thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: This analysis suggests that RR-EVT as an innovative solution to expedite EVT is cost-effective. An RR-EVT system could potentially extend access to care in underserved communities and rural areas, as well as improve care for socioeconomically disadvantaged populations affected by health inequities.PMID:36670531 | DOI:10.3171/2022.12.JNS222115
