Predicting the development of in-hospital cardiogenic shock in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction treated by primary percutaneous coronary intervention: the ORBI risk score
ConclusionThe ORBI risk score provides a readily useable and efficient tool to identify patients at high-risk of developing CS during hospitalization following STEMI, which may aid in further risk-stratification and thus potentially facilitate pre-emptive clinical decision making.

Impact of low stroke volume on mortality in patients with severe aortic stenosis and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction
ConclusionLow flow defined as SVi  <  30 mL/m2 or SV  <  55 mL is an important outcome predictor in severe AS with preserved LVEF under medical and surgical management. Further studies are needed to prospectively test these values for risk stratification and decision making.

Diabetes and long-term outcomes of ischaemic stroke: findings from Get With The Guidelines-Stroke
ConclusionAmong older IS patients diabetes was associated with increased risks of death, cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular hospitalizations, HF, and IS/TIA recurrence.

An African cardiology summitThe World Heart Federation African Summit on Best Practices in Policy and Access to Care in 2017 concluded with the Khartoum Action Plan, to improve cardiovascular on the African continent
The World Heart Federation (WHF) is the umbrella organization of continental and national cardiac societies and heart foundations globally, reporting to the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHF is dedicated to the global fight against CVD, including heart disease, stroke, and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Building on the first Global Summit on Circulatory Health, held at the 2016 World Congress of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Health in Mexico City, the second Summit held in Singapore July 2017 focused on building a civil society movement for circulatory health.

Blood pressure and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes and high cardiovascular risk
ConclusionsIn patients with diabetes and elevated CV risk, even after extensive adjustment for underlying disease burden, there was a persistent association for low DBP with subclinical myocardial injury and risk of MI.

Subclinical device-detected atrial fibrillation and stroke risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionSubclinical AF strongly predicts clinical AF and is associated with elevated absolute stroke risk albeit lower than risk described for clinical AF.

Weight gain after smoking cessation does not modify its protective effect on myocardial infarction and stroke: evidence from a cohort study of men
ConclusionPost-cessation BMI change did not significantly modify the protective association of smoking cessation with MI and stroke.

Innovative strategies to improve adherence to non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation
Abstract

Telemonitoring-based feedback improves adherence to non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants intake in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionTelemonitoring resulted in high NOAC adherence due to the notion of being watched, as evidenced by the rapid decline during the observation period. Feedback further optimized adherence. Telemonitoring with or without feedback may be a cost-effective approach in high-risk patients deemed poorly adherent.

Left atrial function to identify patients with atrial fibrillation at high risk of stroke: new insights from a large registry
ConclusionThe assessment of LA reservoir strain and PA-TDI on echocardiography after initial CHA2DS2-VASc scoring provides additional risk stratification for stroke and may be useful to guide decisions regarding anticoagulation for patients upon first diagnosis of AF.

Characteristics of patients with atrial fibrillation prescribed antiplatelet monotherapy compared with those on anticoagulants: insights from the GARFIELD-AF registry
ConclusionPrescribing AP monotherapy in newly diagnosed AF has declined, but even nowadays a substantial proportion of AP-treated patients with AF have no indication for AP.Clinical Trial RegistrationURL:http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT01090362.
