Study protocol for development and validation of a single tool to assess risks of stroke, diabetes mellitus, myocardial infarction and dementia: DemNCD-Risk
Introduction Current efforts to reduce dementia focus on prevention and risk reduction by targeting modifiable risk factors. As dementia and cardiometabolic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) share risk factors, a single risk-estimating tool for dementia and multiple NCDs could be cost-effective and facilitate concurrent assessments as compared with a conventional single approach. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a new risk tool that estimates an individual’s risk of developing dementia and other NCDs including diabetes mellitus, stroke and myocardial infarction. Once validated, it could be used by the ...

Protocol for a single-blind randomized clinical trial to test the efficacy of bilateral transcranial magnetic stimulation on upper extremity motor function in patients recovering from stroke
No consensus currently exists regarding the optimal protocol for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment of upper-extremity motor dysfunction after stroke. Studies have shown that combine...

Association between electronic nicotine delivery systems use and risk of stroke: a meta-analysis of 1,024,401 participants
CONCLUSIONS: The ENDS usage appears to be associated with a higher risk of stroke compared to non-use, whereas there was no association between former ENDS use and the risk of stroke.PMID:37732043 | PMC:PMC10507757 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/171473

Prevalence and risk factors of stroke in high-altitude areas: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions The findings of this study provide insights into the pooled prevalence of stroke in high-altitude areas, highlighting variations based on geographic regions and sampling type. Moreover, age, gender, hypertension and obesity were found to be associated with the occurrence of stroke. PROSPERO registration number CRD42022381541.

A comparison of chronic conditions and health characteristics between cancer survivors and non-cancer survivors
DISCUSSION: These findings can be used by healthcare and public health practitioners to evaluate the programmatic efforts and resources, implement targeted interventions toward cancer survivors, and improve health and quality of life.PMID:37724026 | DOI:10.1177/17423953231180191

Adult mortality trends in Matlab, Bangladesh: an analysis of cause-specific risks
Conclusion Deaths from stroke, heart disease and cancers were either on the rise or remained unchanged, but other causes declined continuously from 2003 to 2017. Immediate strengthening of the preventive and curative healthcare systems for NCDs management is a burning need.

Soluble C-type lectin-like receptor 2 in stroke (CLECSTRO) study: protocol of a multicentre, prospective cohort of a novel platelet activation marker in acute ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack
This study was approved by the Ethical Committee of the University of Yamanashi as the central ethical committee in agreement with the ethical committees of all collaborative stroke centres. Informed consent will be obtained by an opt-out form from the patients at each stroke centre according to the Ethical Guidelines for Medical and Biological Research Involving Human Subjects by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Association of psoriasis and stroke in end-stage renal disease patients
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to prior research in the general population, psoriasis in ESRD patients was not associated with the risk of stroke after controlling for various demographic and clinical parameters. Our finding emphasizes the importance of controlling for a variety of factors in population studies examining associations of diseases and risk factors.PMID:37716600 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.09.014

Effect of exoskeleton robot-assisted training on gait function in chronic stroke survivors: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials
Conclusion ERAT could be an efficient intervention to improve gait function for individuals who had a chronic stroke. However, more rigorously designed trials are required to draw more solid evidence. PROSPERO registration number CRD42023410796.

Incidence, characteristics and outcome of post-stroke recrudescence in the Chinese population: a single-centre observational study
Conclusions PSR is not uncommon in patients presenting with stroke symptoms and can be distinguished from TIA and SMs based on a combination of clinical features and trigger in the Chinese population. The neurological deficits of patients with PSR often resolve within several days following the resolution of the trigger.

Retrospective cohort study investigating synergism of air pollution and corticosteroid exposure in promoting cardiovascular and thromboembolic events in older adults
Conclusion PM2.5 and systemic corticosteroid use were independently associated with increases in CTE hospitalisations. We also found evidence of significant additive interactions between the two exposures for HF and MI/ACSs suggesting synergy between these two exposures.

Incidence of atrial fibrillation in cryptogenic stroke with patent foramen ovale closure: protocol for the prospective, observational PFO-AF study
Introduction After closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) due to stroke, atrial fibrillation (AF) occurs in up to one in five patients. However, data are sparse regarding the possible pre-existence of AF in these patients prior to PFO closure, and about recurrence of AF in the long term after the procedure. No prospective study to date has investigated these topics in patients with implanted cardiac monitor (ICM). The PFO-AF study (registered with ClinicalTrials.gov under the number NCT04926142) will investigate the incidence of AF occurring within 2 months after percutaneous closure of PFO in patients with prior stroke. AF...

Intervention to reduce sedentary behaviour and improve outcomes after stroke (Get Set Go): a study protocol for the process evaluation of a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial (RECREATE)
We report the protocol for the process evaluation which will address the following objectives: (1) describe and clarify causal assumptions about the intervention, and its mechanisms of impact; (2) assess implementation fidelity; (3) explore views, perceptions and acceptability of the intervention to staff, stroke survivors and their carers; (4) establish the contextual factors that influence implementation, intervention mechanisms and outcomes. Methods and analysis This pilot trial will be conducted in 15 UK-based National Health Service stroke services. This process evaluation study, underpinned by the Medical Research C...
