Temple scientists poised to gain insight into underpinnings of Alzheimer's thanks to grant
(Temple University Health System) Thanks to a new three-year, $2.27 million grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Dr. John Elrod and colleagues are poised to gain novel insight into biological mechanisms that may be driving or worsening neurodegeneration. The researchers will investigate potential mechanisms using mouse models of Alzheimer's disease and a systems biology approach. The work could help identify new drug targets and therapeutic opportunities for Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Peii Chen awarded NIDILRR Grant for stroke research at Kessler Foundation
(Kessler Foundation) Peii Chen, PhD, of Kessler Foundation has been awarded a 2017 Field-Initiated Project grant by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). The three-year $600,000 federal grant funds her innovative project, 'Development of a Virtual Reality Spatial Retraining Therapy to Improve Neglect in Stroke Survivors.'

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai named to new NIH Stroke Research Network
(The Mount Sinai Hospital / Mount Sinai School of Medicine) The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is an inaugural member of the NIH's Stroke Trials Network. Budnik gets EUREKA grant to study communication between nucleus and cytoplasm
(University of Massachusetts Medical School) University of Massachusetts Medical School Professor and Vice Chair of Neurobiology Vivian Budnik, Ph.D., has received a four-year, $1.3 million EUREKA (Exceptional Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to explore a novel mechanism of communication between the cytoplasm and the nucleus, called nuclear envelope budding, that may lead to new understandings for various tissue dystrophies and aging disorders.

Kessler Foundation fellow receives grant from National Institutes of Health
(Kessler Foundation) Rakesh Pilkar, Ph.D., post-doctoral fellow in Human Performance and Engineering Research at Kessler Foundation, was awarded a R03, $153,000 grant by the National Institutes of Health to study the response levels to function electrical stimulation (FES) interventions in walking patterns during the rehabilitation of stroke patients with hemiplegic gait. He will look for the association of the responders' gait characteristics while determining proper FES intervention parameters. Dr. Pilkar's fellowship is funded by NIDRR's ARRT program.

High blood pressure among blacks and young adults is focus of $11 million stroke prevention project

NIH funds research to identify Parkinson's biomarkers
(Emory Health Sciences) The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded a three-year, $900,000 grant to the Center for Biomedical Imaging Statistics at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health. The grant will fund the center's biomarker research in Parkinson's disease to identify non-invasive imaging measures that can detect changes in brain function and biochemistry.
