Cardiovascular Safety in Type 2 Diabetes With Sulfonylureas as Second-line Drugs: A Nationwide Population-Based Comparative Safety Study
CONCLUSIONSOur findings contribute to the understanding that second-line SU for glucose lowering are unlikely to increase CV risk or all-cause mortality. Given their potent efficacy, microvascular benefits, cost effectiveness, and widespread use, this study supports that SU should remain a part of the global diabetes treatment portfolio.

Commentary on Risk Factors for First and Subsequent CVD Events in Type 1 Diabetes: The DCCT/EDIC Study
AbstractType 1 diabetes patients are well known to have a higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Livingstone SJ et al.1 analyzed the data of 26,026 type 1 diabetes patients in the Scottish nationwide diabetes register during 2005 ‐2007 and found that the contemporary relative risk of coronary heart disease and stroke in type 1 diabetes patients remains exceptionally high when compared to the general population, although the absolute incidence of CVD was lower than previously reported.

Cancer has overtaken cardiovascular disease as the commonest cause of death in Scottish type  2 diabetes patients: A population‐based study (The Ayrshire Diabetes Follow‐up Cohort study)
ConclusionsThis study confirmed increased mortality risk in type  2 diabetes patients, and suggests that where cardiovascular risk factors are being treated aggressively, cancer takes on a greater importance in the cause of death. Should greater consideration now be given for cancer as a complication of diabetes?

Incident ischaemic stroke and Type 2 diabetes: trends in incidence and case fatality in Scotland 2004 –2013
ConclusionsIschaemic stroke incidence declined no faster in people with a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes than in people without diabetes. Increasing prevalence of Type 2 diabetes among stroke patients may mean that declines in case fatality over time will be less marked in the future.This article is protected by copyright. Gender differences and patterns of cardiovascular risk factors in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes: a population‐based analysis from a Scottish region
ConclusionsThe study shows gender differences between Type 1 and 2 diabetes that are of clinical significance and require further investigation. Follow‐up of the patients included in the present study should give us much greater understanding of the importance of gender in the development of metabolic abnormalities and diabetes complications.This article is protected by copyright.
