Cost-effectiveness analysis of dronedarone versus amiodarone, propafenone and sotalol in patients with atrial fibrillation: results for Serbia.
CONCLUSIONS: Results of our model indicate that dronedarone is cost effective therapy compared with amiodarone, propafenone and sotalol in patients with atrial fibrillation if the outcome is number of years spent without stroke. PMID: 25428811 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Amiodarone, Anticoagulation, and Clinical Events in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Insights From the ARISTOTLE Trial
This study sought to examine the association of major thrombotic clinical events and bleeding with the use of amiodarone in the ARISTOTLE (Apixaban for Reduction in Stroke and Other Thromboembolic Events in Atrial Fibrillation) trial.MethodsBaseline characteristics of patients who received amiodarone at randomization were compared with those who did not receive amiodarone. The interaction between randomized treatment and amiodarone was tested using a Cox model, with main effects for randomized treatment and amiodarone and their interaction. Matching on the basis of a propensity score was used to compare patients who receiv...

Efficacy and Safety of Amiodarone in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation in the Era of Target-Specific Anticoagulants ∗
In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), loss of organized atrial contraction and accelerated ventricular rate can have both immediate and long-term adverse consequences, including deterioration of hemodynamics, progressive atrial and ventricular dysfunction, and an ongoing risk of ischemic stroke and systemic embolic events (SEEs). The principal goals of therapy are control of symptoms and prevention of thromboembolism.

P-119 * different measures to prevent atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing pulmonary resection for lung cancer: evidence from a comprehensive network meta-analysis of randomized and observational studies
Conclusions: Beta-blockers and flecainide are effective in reducing the incidence of postoperative AF in patients after pulmonary resections which is not the case with digoxin; data on remaining treatments are sparse and preclude drawing definite conclusions. Disclosure: No significant relationships.

Abstract 374: Quality Improvement Program to Optimize Pre-Operative Evaluation of Elective Cardiovascular Surgery Patients Reduces Complications and Improves Length of Stay Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusions: A standardized pre-operative evaluation protocol in combination with prophylactic amiodarone in appropriate patients was associated with lower overall complications and a reduction in post-operative AF and LOS. Standardized protocols may enable health care providers to optimize pre-operative management of elective surgery patients and improve care quality and outcomes.

Abstract 151: Outcomes Associated With Prophylactic Amiodarone Protocol in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: A Single Center Experience Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Implementation of an amiodarone prophylaxis protocol order care set was associated with greater utilization of amiodarone. It was also associated with a modest decrease in the incidence of STS-defined POAF, stroke and MI but was not associated with a change in 30-day mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Further studies are needed to study the cost-effectiveness and risk-benefit analysis of routine amiodarone as prophylaxis.

Risk of Atrial Fibrillation After Atrial Flutter Ablation: Impact of AF History, Gender, and Antiarrhythmic Drug Medication
ConclusionsAF occurrence after AFL ablation is frequent (>20%), especially in patients with a history of AF, in female patients, and in patients treated with class I antiarrythmics/amiodarone prior to AFL. Since most patients who experience AF after AFL ablation have a CHA2DS2‐VASc ≥1, the decision to stop anticoagulants after ablation should be considered on an individual basis.

A prospective survey in European Society of Cardiology member countries of atrial fibrillation management: baseline results of EURObservational Research Programme Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) Pilot General Registry
Conclusion The EURObservational Research Programme Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) Pilot Registry has provided systematic collection of contemporary data regarding the management and treatment of AF by cardiologists in ESC member countries. Oral anticoagulant use has increased, but novel OAC use was still low. Compliance with the treatment guidelines for patients with the lowest and higher stroke risk scores remains suboptimal.

Cardioversion of Atrial Fibrillation (RHYTHM-AF) International Registry in Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: Conversion to sinus rhythm was attempted in < 60% of the patients with AF admitted to the hospital with an intention to terminate arrhythmia. Electrical cardioversion was successful in ~90% of the patients, while pharmacological cardioversion in ~75% of the patients (amiodarone and propafenone were most commonly used). The rate of complications was low (2.8%). PMID: 24526513 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Non-standard dose dronedarone in treating atrial fibrillation patients
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia requiring medical care . Dronedarone is derived from amiodarone, but has different electrophysiological effects . Dronedarone has been approved to treat paroxysmal or persistent AF, which is associated with a reduction of AF-related hospitalization, stroke or mortality . However, dronedarone should be avoided in patients with decompensated heart failure or permanent AF due to an increased mortality .

Management of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation and Subsequent Outcomes in Contemporary Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: Insights From the Society of Thoracic Surgeons CAPS‐Care Atrial Fibrillation Registry
ConclusionsPostoperative AF is common following CABG, and such patients continue to have higher rates of postoperative complications. Postoperative AF is significantly associated with increased length of stay following surgery.

Abstract 205: New Onset Heart Failure and Adverse Ischemic Events Associated with Amiodarone and Dronedarone Use among Atrial Fibrillation Patients Poster Session II
Conclusions: In a propensity score matched observational cohort study, amiodarone use was associated with higher incidence rate of new onset HF, HF hospitalizations, and TIA as identified from claims. This finding differs from other clinical studies. Future observational cohort studies should incorporate medical record review for validation since information from claims might be insufficient to fully account for underlying patient risk status, or accurately determine if HF was new onset.Key words: amiodarone; dronedarone; atrial fibrillation; heart failure.

Temporal changes in patient characteristics and prior pharmacotherapy in patients undergoing radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation: a Danish nationwide cohort study
Conclusion During a 10-year period, RFA was increasingly performed in older patients with higher co-morbidity, and without prior trial of antiarrhythmic therapy. These findings may provide a framework to understand the outcomes of RFA.

Hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation compared to those included in recent trials on novel oral anticoagulants: A population-based study.
CONCLUSION: In patients recently discharged from the hospital with the diagnosis of nonvalvular AF, warfarin use decreases and aspirin treatment increases with patients' age. These patients are older, more frequently female, and on multiple medications. The benefit of NOACs in these subjects needs to be confirmed in phase IV clinical studies.
