Percutaneous Transvalvular Microaxial Flow Pump Support in Cardiology
Circulation. 2022 Apr 19;145(16):1254-1284. doi: 10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.058229. Epub 2022 Apr 18.ABSTRACTThe Impella device (Impella, Abiomed, Danvers, MA) is a percutaneous transvalvular microaxial flow pump that is currently used for (1) cardiogenic shock, (2) left ventricular unloading (combination of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and Impella concept), (3) high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions, (4) ablation of ventricular tachycardia, and (5) treatment of right ventricular failure. Impella-assisted forward blood flow increased mean arterial pressure and cardiac output, peripheral tissue pe...

Functional Calsequestrin-1 Is Expressed in the Heart and Its Deficiency Is Causally Related to Malignant Hyperthermia-Like Arrhythmia
Conclusions: Casq1 is expressed in the heart, where it regulates SR Ca2+ release and heart rate. Casq1 deficiency independently causes MH/EHS-like ventricular arrhythmia by trigger-induced Casq1 oligomerization and a relief of its inhibitory effect on RyR2-mediated Ca2+ release, thus revealing a new inherited arrhythmia and a novel mechanism for MH/EHS arrhythmogenesis.PMID:34162222 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.053255

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2021 Jun 21:CIR0000000000000988. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000000988. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by recurrent complete and partial upper airway obstructive events, resulting in intermittent hypoxemia, autonomic fluctuation, and sleep fragmentation. Approximately 34% and 17% of middle-aged men and women, respectively, meet the diagnostic criteria for OSA. Sleep disturbances are common and underdiagnosed among middle-aged and older adults, and the prevalence varies by race/ethnicity, sex, and obesity status. OSA prevalence is as high as 40% to 80% in patients with ...

Drug-Induced Arrhythmias: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.
Abstract Many widely used medications may cause or exacerbate a variety of arrhythmias. Numerous antiarrhythmic agents, antimicrobial drugs, psychotropic medications, and methadone, as well as a growing list of drugs from other therapeutic classes (neurological drugs, anticancer agents, and many others), can prolong the QT interval and provoke torsades de pointes. Perhaps less familiar to clinicians is the fact that drugs can also trigger other arrhythmias, including bradyarrhythmias, atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia, monomorphic ventricular tachy...
