Clinical Reasoning: A 43-year-old woman with right limb weakness
A 43-year-old woman presented with a 4-day history of right limb weakness. While biking 4 days earlier, she felt a weakness in her right hand and leg. She had a history of hypertension for more than 2 years, and was taking extended-release nifedipine tablets (40 mg) and perindopril (4 mg) daily, but her blood pressure was difficult to control (fluctuations of 150–180/90–115 mm Hg). The patient did not smoke or drink alcohol, and had no family history of similar diseases.

Clinical Reasoning: A case of subacute cognitive decline in a 76-year-old man
A 76-year-old, right-handed man presented to our emergency department with a 3-day history of cognitive decline following a motor vehicle collision. Medical history included hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and renal dysfunction. He was a high-functioning retired advertising executive who formerly smoked cigarettes, and used neither recreational drugs nor alcohol.

Sex differences exist after intracerebral hemorrhage but may not affect outcome
While differences by race/ethnicity and age are commonly evaluated, surprisingly few studies have focused on differences in risk factor and etiology for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).1 Epidemiologic data have identified important differences in risk factors for ICH, with hypertension strongly associated with nonlobar, deep ICH, while factors related to cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) predominate for lobar ICH.2 In the current issue of Neurology®, Roquer et al.3 found that women were more likely to have lobar ICH than men, even after adjusting for age. Since men and women had similar proportions of diagnosed CAA, ICH...

Sex-related differences in primary intracerebral hemorrhage
Conclusions: Patients with ICH showed sex-related differences in demographic characteristics, ICH location, and vascular risk factors, but not in stroke care, 3-month mortality, or adjusted poor outcome.

Subacute decline in serum lipids precedes the occurrence of primary intracerebral hemorrhage
Conclusions: Longitudinal lipid levels differ between ICH cases and non-ICH controls, most notably for a decline in serum TC and LDL levels within 6 months preceding primary ICH, independent of statin or alcohol use. These changes in serum TC and LDL trends suggest a biological pathway that precipitates ICH occurrence. Further studies are needed to replicate these results and characterize rate of change in serum lipids as a potential biomarker of impending acute cerebral injury.

Gender Difference in Stroke: Are They Different in India? (P1.261)
Conclusion: The incidence rate was higher in men as compared to women. There were differences in risk factors and stroke type. There were no gender differences seen in stroke outcome. Alcoholism and In-Hospital Mortality among Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients in Puerto Rico (P1.263)
Conclusions: The adjusted OR of 3.18 suggests a positive association and in-patient hemorrhagic stroke mortality. However the small sample size and low power limit the ability to delineate a clear statistical association, thereby warranting further study into this subject matter as alcoholism is a modifiable risk factor and early interventions may lower hemorrhagic stroke mortality in this population.Disclosure: Dr. Smirnoff has nothing to disclose. Olfactory and Gustatory Dysfunction and Subsequent Stroke Risk: A Community-Based Cohort Study (P1.107)
CONCLUSIONS: Olfactory and gustatory dysfunction was associated with increased short-term future risks of stroke. Disparity in Decreased Age and Increased Incidence of Stroke in a Low-Income Chinese Population (P1.108)
Conclusions:Two disparities, which including decreased mean age of stroke onset and increased incidence, and decreased mean age of stroke onset and increased life expectancy were found in a low-income Chinese population, especially in men. These findings imply that stroke burden will continue to increase in China if the risk factors remain unchecked. Disclosure: Dr. Wang has nothing to disclose. Dr. Yang has nothing to disclose. Healthy Lifestyle and Functional Outcomes from Stroke in Women (P1.111)
Conclusions: The highest versus lowest scores on the HLI were associated with reductions in risk of total and ischemic strokes with mild, moderate, and severe functional outcomes. The evidence that modest HLI scores reduced risks of total and ischemic stroke with moderate and severe functional outcomes suggests that even modest lifestyle changes may translate to reductions in risk of a disabling stroke event. Pattern of Acute Stroke Presentation in a Young Tertiary Hospital in South-South, Nigeria: Appraisal of Risk Factors and Clinical Outcomes (P1.118)
CONCLUSION: Stroke is associated with high mortality with patients presenting relatively young. Hemorrhagic stroke is common though ischemic stroke is still the commonest. Hypertension is the commonest risk factor. Family history of stroke and recurrent or history of previous stroke are also high.Disclosure: Dr. Obiabo has received personal compensation for activities with Novartis as a speaker.

Primordial Prevention of Stroke: Identifying the Determinants of Hypertension in Urban Uganda (P3.338)
