Age-Dependence of Flow Homeostasis in the Left Ventricle
Conclusions: In average, blood spends 1 to 3 beats inside the LV with very low shear stress rates. The apical region is the most prone to blood stasis, particularly in mid-aged adults. The washout of blood in the normal LV is age-dependent due to physiological changes in the degree of apical penetration of the filling waves. Introduction Cardioembolic stroke is a major source of mortality and disability worldwide and blood stasis one of its major determinants (Adams et al., 1986). Left ventricular (LV) function has evolved to maximize mechanical efficiency and ensure organ perfusion at a low cost of energy and fill...

1 Ventricular assist devices: developments in asia and global outlook for the next 10 years
The advent of left ventricular assist systems to support patients with advanced-stage heart failure has been a 50 year odyssey, now available broadly to such patients.1 Engineering advances have ushered in an era of small, durable devices that can be fully implanted within the chest. Yet, haemocompatibility related adverse events, which emanate from the interaction between the device and the patient they support are manifest principally in increased stroke rates, de novo device thrombosis requiring replacement and in gastrointestinal bleeding (a peculiar adverse event resulting from the unnatural physiology of continuous f...

The 2017 hormone therapy position statement of The North American Menopause Society
The 2017 Hormone Therapy Position Statement of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) updates the 2012 Hormone Therapy Position Statement of The North American Menopause Society and identifies future research needs. An Advisory Panel of clinicians and researchers expert in the field of women's health and menopause was recruited by NAMS to review the 2012 Position Statement, evaluate new literature, assess the evidence, and reach consensus on recommendations, using the level of evidence to identify the strength of recommendations and the quality of the evidence. The Panel's recommendations were reviewed and approved by...

Outcomes of primary percutaneous coronary intervention in acute myocardial infarction due to unprotected left main thrombosis: The Asia ‐Pacific Left Main ST‐Elevation Registry (ASTER)
ConclusionsSTEMI from culprit unprotected left main coronary artery stenosis is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Emergency PCI provides an important treatment option in this high‐risk group, but in‐hospital mortality remains high.

Anticoagulation needs in asians with atrial fibrillation: a mythbuster.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) has long been known to increase the risk of stroke. As a result, relevant international guidelines recommend that measures to reduce the risk of thrombus formation should be considered in all patients presenting with AF. Based on risk assessment scores, patients would then receive either thrombocyte aggregation inhibitors or oral anticoagulants. Despite this advice, compliance rates with the recommendations are poor across all countries surveyed. Evidence from the Global Anticoagulant Registry in the Field (GARFIELD) registry shows that major deviation from guidelines is due in la...
