This study is a retrospective observational study based on a prospectively collected FEES and stroke database. Consecutive patient cases with acute ischemic infratentorial stroke and FEES examination between 2017 and 2022 were identified. Group allocation was performed based on PAS scores. Screening for silent aspiration in hyperacute stroke: A feasibility study of clinical swallowing examination and cough reflex testing
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: CRT, CSE and FEES are feasible in 58% of hyperacute stroke patients in this setting. FEES anxiety is the main recruitment barrier and is not always well tolerated. Patient suitability for free water protocols in acute stroke and general medicine: a qualitative study of clinician perceptions
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Despite the benefits of FWPs in other settings, in acute stroke and general medicine, clinicians erred on the side of safety and, in most cases, would not implement an FWP. Future clinical research is needed to systematically design high-quality and feasible clinical trials to determine the benefits and safety of FWPs for patients with dysphagia in these settings. Food-Grade Activated Charcoal for Contrast-Enhanced Photoacoustic Imaging of Aspiration: A Phantom Study
This study introduces a potential new aspiration screening method based on photoacoustic imaging (PAI), a medical imaging technology that measures the optical contrast of tissue rather than mechanical or elastic properties. Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Dysphagia and Associated Pneumonia in Patients With Stroke From India: A Call to Arms
