Comparative analysis of in-hospital outcomes between spontaneous vertebral and carotid arterial dissection at National level (P5.048)
Conclusions:Vertebral artery dissection affects younger patients in comparison to carotid dissections, is associated with higher in hospital complications and procedures, probably thereby leading to prolonged length of stay and higher hospital charges in comparison with carotid artery dissection. Early diagnoses of vertebral artery dissection as a cause of ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation is imperative to improve outcomes.Disclosure: Dr. Qureshi has nothing to disclose. Disability and mortality after permanent feeding tube placement in patients with acute stroke (P3.107)
Conclusions:In our large cohort of patients with acute stroke and PEG tubes, nearly 9/10 had severe disability at discharge. From discharge to 1 year, there was no difference in mortality between PEG and NG patient cohorts. These results suggest that PEG tubes serve mainly to prolong survival in patients discharged with severe disability. Our study may help support guideline creation and facilitate discussions with patients and families regarding PEG tube placement after acute stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Joundi has nothing to disclose. Stroke Associated Pneumonia: The University Hospitals-Cleveland Medical Center experience (P4.301)
Conclusions:In our series, most cases of SAP occurred in patients with severe stroke who were more likely to be ‘found down’ on presentation, urgently intubated and NPO. This data supports that impacting prevention and outcomes will require new strategies focusing on patients that require urgent or prolonged intubation rather than revising the current dysphagia assessment process.Disclosure: Dr. Attar has nothing to disclose. Utilization of Hospice Care and Patient Characteristics Associated With Discharge to Hospice in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients (P6.263)
Conclusions:The rates of discharge to hospice following AIS have substantially grown in the past decade and at our institution 4.2% were discharged to hospice. These patients were older, had higher median NIHSS and more often had altered level of consciousness upon presentation. Large, multicenter studies are needed to address the variation in the rates of hospice care across the United States.Disclosure: Dr. Vuong has nothing to disclose. Dr. Ali has nothing to disclose. Derivation and Validation of a Proposed Long Length of Stay (>= 7 days) Score in Patients Hospitalized for Acute Ischemic Stroke (P1.067)
Conclusions:Many factors play a role in determining the length of stay for AIS patients. Our study provides a scoring system that may help physicians predict which patients are more likely to have a prolonged hospital stay.Disclosure: Dr. Mahmood has nothing to disclose. Cor Triatriatum and Stroke: A Case Report and Review of Literature (P3.294)
Conclusions:This is the largest review of CTS cases with associated stroke. The review showed neuroimaging results consistent with a cardioembolic mechanism. All but two of the cases made use of anticoagulation. Three cases underwent surgery. This case has the longest follow-up and the first to demonstrate failure of anti-platelet therapy and anticoagulation. The need for further investigations regarding optimal stroke prevention in this subset of patients is emphasized.Disclosure: Dr. Diestro has nothing to disclose. Dr. Espiritu has nothing to disclose. Enteral tube feeding in acute ischemic stroke patients as a strong predictor of in-hospital stroke mortality (P5.294)
Conclusions:In conclusion, age, total NIHSS, and dysarthria score are predictors for enteral tube feeding in acute ischemic stroke patients. Enteral tube feeding is strongly associated with the incidence of pneumonia and increased mortality among acute stroke patients.Disclosure: Dr. ROCHA has nothing to disclose. Association between nasogastric tubes, pneumonia, and clinical outcomes in acute stroke patients
Conclusions: Early NGT does not increase PSP incidence, mortality, or poor functional outcomes and can be used safely in acute stroke patients.

When Non-Revascularized Transfer Patients Come A-Knocking at a Stroke Center (P1.201)
Conclusions: Despite having more severe strokes and higher frequency of adverse events, patients transferred into our CSC did not have worse short term functional outcomes. This highlights the importance of specialized inpatient care provided in NICUs and stroke units by experienced multidisciplinary teams.Disclosure: Dr. Sands has received research support from Biogen. On Admission Lymphopenia in ICH Patients Is Associated with Increased Mortality and Poor Functional Outcome (P1.204)
Conclusions: In patients with ICH, OALP is associated with poorer functional admission status, larger hematoma volume, higher incidence of pneumonia/sepsis. OALP was related to unfavorable functional outcome and increased rates of mortality. Further studies need to clarify whether the impact of OALP on mortality reflects comorbidity or independent, stroke-associated immunosuppressive effects.Disclosure: Dr. Giede-Jeppe has nothing to disclose. Reduction in 30 Day Readmission of Stroke Patients from Acute Care Centers with the Involvement of Medical Hospitalists (P1.214)
Conclusions: In the absence of a medical hospitalist, stroke patients are predominantly readmitted for infectious etiology. Readmission complications are decreased among those discharged from a primary hospitalist service. We conclude that involving medical hospitalists in the care of stroke patients during their initial admission optimizes discharge condition; thus reducing the risk of complications and decreasing frequency of re-hospitalizations.Disclosure: Dr. Hua has nothing to disclose. Delays in the Emergency Department, Medical Complications of Stroke and Predictors of Clinical Outcomes: The McGill Experience (P2.310)
Conclusions: This preliminary analysis of our cohort reveals that there is a significant delay in the admission of patients from the ED to the stroke unit, and that this delay is not in keeping with current Canadian Stroke Best Practice guidelines. Medical complications were prevalent, and pneumonia, brain edema and sepsis during admission were associated with worse clinical outcomes. Further work will explore the correlation between delays in ED, medical complications and clinical outcomes. Conclusions:Disclosure: Dr. Chen has nothing to disclose. Neuro-Psychiatry Diseases Predisposing to Mental Status Changes in Patients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia (P1.313)
Conclusions: This study indicates that MSC is frequent in patients with CAP presenting to hospital emergency departments. The etiology of MSC is diverse, with approximately half of the cases due to neuro-psychiatric conditions. In patients presenting to the emergency department with MSC, a high index of suspicion should be maintained regarding the diagnosis of pneumonia.Disclosure: Dr. Kolikonda has nothing to disclose.
