Background: Therapy guidelines recommend speech and language therapy (SLT) as the "gold standard" for aphasia treatment. Treatment intensity (i.e.,>=5 hours of SLT per week) is a key predictor of SLT outcome. The scientific evidence to support the efficacy of SLT is unsatisfactory to date given the lack of randomized controlled trials (RCT), particularly with respect to chronic aphasia (lasting for>6 months after initial stroke). A comprehensive exercise program for a young adult male with Down syndrome who experienced a stroke.
Conclusion: Improved cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, balance and mobility provide preliminary evidence of the trainability of individuals with both DS and stroke. Future studies are warranted to investigate the role of exercise in risk factor reduction for primary and secondary prevention of stroke in people with DS. Ischemic Stroke Related to Severe Iron-Deficiency Anemia in Adults May Benefit from Blood Transfusion (P01.232)
CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of IDA is 1-20%; it is 3.9% in our AIS population and is often related to untreated uterine bleeding. As described in the pediatric population, severe IDA may be an underlying mechanism of ischemic stroke in adults, therefore, efforts must be undertaken to identify and treat the cause of the anemia.
