Long-term effectiveness, outcomes and complications of bariatric surgery
World J Clin Cases. 2023 Jul 6;11(19):4504-4512. doi: 10.12998/wjcc.v11.i19.4504.ABSTRACTDietary imbalance and overeating can lead to an increasingly widespread disease - obesity. Aesthetic considerations aside, obesity is defined as an excess of adipose tissue that can lead to serious health problems and can predispose to a number of pathological changes and clinical diseases, including diabetes; hypertension; atherosclerosis; coronary artery disease and stroke; obstructive sleep apnea; depression; weight-related arthropathies and endometrial and breast cancer. A body weight 20% above ideal for age, gender and height is a...

White Matter Cerebrovascular Reactivity: Effects of Microangiopathy and Proximal Occlusions on the Dynamic BOLD Response
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest additive effects of microvascular and macrovascular disease upon white matter CVR, but with greater overall effects relating to macrovascular SOD than to apparent microangiopathy. Dynamic ACZ-BOLD presents a promising path towards a quantitative stroke risk imaging biomarker.BACKGROUND: Cerebral white matter (WM) microangiopathy manifests as sporadic or sometimes confluent high intensity lesions in MR imaging with T2-weighting, and bears known associations with stroke, cognitive disability, depression and other neurological disorders 1-5 . Deep white matter is particularly susceptible to isc...

Sex differences in the association between stroke risk factors and pre-clinical predictors of stroke in the childhood determinants of Adult Health study
CONCLUSIONS: Smoking, SBP and glucose affect carotid structure and function more in women than men with some of this risk due to co-occurring risk factors.PMID:37391336 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.06.077

Psychological stress is associated with arterial inflammation in people living with treated HIV infection
In conclusion, psychological stress was associated with systemic and carotid arterial inflammation in this group of PLWH with treated infection. These data provide preliminary evidence for a link between psychological stress, inflammation, and atherosclerosis as potential drivers of excess cerebrovascular risk among PLWH.PMID:37369339 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2023.06.019

Determinants of self-rated health among elderly patients with hypertension: a cross-sectional analysis based on the Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study provide evidence for the need to develop effective health promotion programs for the well-being of hypertensive patients.PMID:37337961 | DOI:10.1080/10641963.2023.2224942

A causal relationship between irritability and cardiovascular diseases: a Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: Our findings support the first genetic evidence of the causality of genetically predicted irritability with the risk of developing into CVDs. Our results deliver a viewpoint that more early active interventions to manage an individual's anger and related unhealthy lifestyle habits are needed to prevent the occurrence of adverse cardiovascular events.PMID:37324625 | PMC:PMC10267866 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2023.1174329

The Future of Ischemic Stroke Diagnosis and a Review of Underrecognized Ischemic Stroke Etiologies
Neurotherapeutics. 2023 May 8. doi: 10.1007/s13311-023-01383-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccurate ischemic stroke etiologic determination and diagnosis form the foundation of excellent cerebrovascular care as from it stems initiation of the appropriate secondary prevention strategy as well as appropriate patient education regarding specific risk factors for that subtype. Recurrent stroke rates are highest among those patients who receive an incorrect initial stroke diagnosis. Patient distrust and patient reported depression are also higher. The cause of the ischemic stroke also informs predicted patient outcomes and t...
