Headache at the Chronic Stage of Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Headache in ischemic stroke survivors at the chronic stage is more frequent in women and in patients with pre-stroke headache. It is most frequently a headache with different characteristics of the pre-stroke headache and only rarely a new-onset headache starting at the acute stage and persisting at the chronic stage. Use of combined hormonal contraception and stroke: A case-control study of the impact of migraine type and estrogen dose on ischemic stroke risk
CONCLUSIONS: Overall stroke risk in our cohort of CHC users was low. When CHCs are used in those with migraine, formulations containing ≤30 μg EE are preferred. Shared decision-making should include discussions about ischemic stroke risks in patients with migraine, even those without aura.PMID:36752588 | DOI:10.1111/head.14473

A Narrative Review of Persistent Post-Stroke Headache - A New Entry in the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd Edition.
CONCLUSION: Recognition of persistent post-stroke headache as a separate clinical entity from acute stroke-attributed headache is the first step toward better defining its natural history and most effective treatment strategies. PMID: 30152015 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Migraine Age of Onset and Association With Ischemic Stroke in Late Life: 20 Years Follow-Up in ARIC.
CONCLUSION: As compared to the no headache participants, increased stroke risk in late life was observed in participants with late onset of MA. In this cohort, longer cumulative exposure to migraine with visual aura, as would be expected with early onset of migraine, was not associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke in late life. This study underscores the importance of the age of onset of MA in assessing stroke risk in older migraineurs. PMID: 30663778 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Migraine and Ischemic Stroke in Women. A Narrative Review.
CONCLUSION: The commonality of factors associated with MWA and with MWA-associated stroke suggest that persons with secondary, ischemia-induced aura may be at elevated risk of stroke. Although further research is needed, we recommend consideration of a diagnostic evaluation of MWA that mirrors the evaluation of transient ischemic attack, given that prophylactic treatment targeting the ischemic origin of secondary aura may prevent migraine as well as stroke. Spreading Depolarization May Link Migraine and Stroke.
Abstract Migraine increases the risk of stroke, particularly in young and otherwise healthy adults. Being the most frequent neurological condition, migraine prevalence is on a par with that of other common stroke risk factors, such as diabetes or hypertension. Several patterns of association have emerged: (1) migraine and stroke share a common association (eg, vasculopathies, patent foramen ovale, or pulmonary A-V malformations); (2) injury to the arterial wall such as acute arterial dissections can present as migraine aura attacks or stroke; (3) strokes rarely develop during a migraine attack, as described for "m...

Risk of Stroke Associated With Use of Estrogen Containing Contraceptives in Women With Migraine: A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review shows a lack of good quality studies assessing risk of stroke associated with low dose estrogen use in women with migraine. Further study in this area is needed. The available evidence is consistent with an additive increase in stroke risk with CHC use in women with migraine with aura. Since the absolute risk of stroke is low even in the presence of these risk factors, use of CHCs in women who have migraine with aura should be based on an individualized assessment of harms and benefits. Short-term stroke risk after emergency department treat-and-release headache visit
CONCLUSION: Approximately 1 in 700 patients discharged to home from the ED with a headache diagnosis had a stroke in the following month. Stroke risk was three to four times higher after an ED visit for headache compared to renal colic or back pain.PMID:36073865 | DOI:10.1111/head.14387

Assessing the influence of migraine on ischemic penumbra and on the prognosis of ischemic stroke: A prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Migraine is not associated with the absence of ischemic penumbra, the volume of the ischemic penumbra, or the stroke prognosis.PMID:36988078 | DOI:10.1111/head.14492
