Prophylactic LVAD for high ‐risk patients undergoing cardiac surgery
ConclusionsProphylactic LVAD is a viable technique in select cardiac surgery patients who are high-risk for postcardiotomy shock. Further prospective study is warranted.

Comparison of minimally invasive versus conventional thoracic aortic operations: Early and midterm results in a series of 624 patients
ConclusionsMini proximal aortic operations can be performed successfully without compromising the proven efficacy and safety of conventional access. In selected patients, MS was associated with very low mortality and morbidity rates. Additionally, MS demonstrated superior clinical outcomes as regards respiratory adverse events, when compared with FS.

Original technique for tricuspid valve replacement by mitral homograft: Step ‐by‐step approach and initial results
ConclusionSatisfactory initial clinical and hemodynamic results were achieved utilizing our technique. Mid- and long-term results are required to understand the place of homografts in tricuspid valve surgery.

Left atrial appendage exclusion with less invasive left ventricular assist device implantation
ConclusionResults from our pilot study demonstrated the safety and feasibility of LAAE concomitant with LIS LVAD as a stroke prevention strategy. This is the first prospective study describing LAAE performed concomitantly to less invasive LVAD implantation. The efficacy of LAAE in long-term stroke prevention needs to be confirmed in future prospective randomized clinical trials.

The impact of prior cardiac surgery on patients undergoing surgical repair for acute type A aortic dissection
ConclusionsThese findings suggest that re-sternotomy can be safely performed with similar outcomes as first-time sternotomy. Central initiation of CPB after sternal reentry limits CPB time and may therefore represent a protective strategy that enhances outcomes for patients presenting with ATAAD and prior cardiac surgery.

On ‐ versus off‐pump CABG in octogenarians: A propensity‐matched analysis from the UK National Database
ConclusionThe data show similar in-hospital mortality in octogenarians regardless of the revascularization technique used. Off-pump when compared with on-pump CABG is associated with a lower incidence in postoperative neurological events but a higher need for renal dialysis.

Females have an increased risk of short ‐term mortality after cardiac surgery compared to males: Insights from a national database
ConclusionFemales in the United Kingdom have an increased risk of short-term mortality after cardiac surgery compared to males. This highlights the need to focus on the understanding of the causes behind these disparities and implementation of strategies to improve outcomes in females.

Valve choice for aortic valve replacement in patients between 50 and 70 years of age
ConclusionThere appears to be conflicting data on survival with some studies suggesting a survival benefit with mechanical valves.

Renal outcomes in valve ‐in‐valve transcatheter versus redo surgical aortic valve replacement: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionRenoprotective strategies should be put into place to prevent and reduce AKI incidence regardless of the treatment modality. Patients undergoing re-intervention for the aortic valve constitute a high-risk and frail population in which ViV-TAVR demonstrated it might be a feasible option for carefully selected patients. Long-term follow-up data and randomized control trials will be needed to evaluate mortality and morbidity outcomes between these 2 treatments.

Using tissue mitral valves in younger patients: A word of caution
ConclusionsTissue valve degeneration is still an issue even in the new generations of mitral tissue valves. The significant risk of reoperation in patients with mitral tissue valves should be considered when using those valves in younger patients. Mechanical valves remain a valid option for all age groups.

Immediate and late outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve implantation versus surgical aortic valve replacement in bicuspid valves: Meta ‐analysis of reconstructed time‐to‐event data
ConclusionConsidering the immediate outcomes and comparable overall survival observed in risk-adjusted populations, TAVI can be used safely in selected BAV patients. However, a time-varying risk is present (favoring SAVR over TAVI at a later timepoint). This finding was likely driven by higher rates of PPI with TAVI.

The current practice of transcatheter aortic valve replacement in China
ConclusionsAmong patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement in China, device implantation success was achieved in 97.85% of cases. The most common vascular access approach was transfemoral. General anesthesia was the most commonly used anesthetic technique. Paravalvular leakage (458 patients, 21.89%) was the most common complication.
