Investigation on Cr(VI)-bioreduction mechanism and reduction products by a novel Microbacterium sp. strain NEAU-W11
In this study, a novel Cr(VI)-reducing strain, Microbacterium sp. NEAU-W11, was reported, and its reduction mechanism was investigated. Microbacterium sp. NEAU-W11 could effectively degrade Cr(VI) under the conditions of pH 7-10, 15-35 °C, and the coexistence of metal pollutants such as Pb and Ni, etc. In addition, both Fe3+ and Cu2+ could improve the reducing ability of strain NEAU-W11, and glucose and lactose as electron donors also had promoting effect. Heat treatment of resting cells confirmed that chromium removal was not biological sorption but biological reduction. The active reductase of strain NEAU-W11 to chromiu...

Impact of lanadfill characteristics on the atmospheric exposure to halogenated flame retardants in gulls
The objective of this study was to investigate how atmospheric exposure in ring-billed gulls to PBDEs and other HFRs is influenced by selected landfill characteristics (i.e., daily cover materials, waste types and tonnage). Miniature passive air samplers (PASs) combined with GPS dataloggers were deployed for ten days during six years on the back of wild-caught ring-billed gulls breeding in the Montreal area. Atmospheric levels of several PBDEs and other HFRs determined in PASs were found to increase with the presence probability of gulls in the two largest landfills using automotive shredder residues as daily cover materia...

Galantamine-memantine hybrids for Alzheimer's disease: The influence of linker rigidity in biological activity and pharmacokinetic properties
Eur J Med Chem. 2023 Sep 12;261:115803. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2023.115803. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeurodegenerative processes characterizing Alzheimer's disease (AD) are strictly related to the impairment of cholinergic and glutamatergic neurotransmitter systems which provoke synaptic loss. These experimental evidences still represent the foundation of the actual standard-of-care treatment for AD, albeit palliative, consisting on the coadministration of an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and the NMDAR antagonist memantine. In looking for more effective treatments, we previously developed a series of galantamine-meman...

Effect of cycloastragenol and punicalagin on Prp(106-126) and A β(25-35) oligomerization and fibrillizaton
In this study, we have examined the effect of two NPs, cycloastragenol (CAG) and punicalagin (PCG), on the metal-induced oligomerization and aggregation of Aβ25-35 and PrP106-126 peptides. The peptide aggregation and inhibitory properties of both NPs were examined by the thioflavin-T (ThT) assay, MALDI-TOF, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Among the two NPs, PCG significantly binds to the peptides, chelates metal ions (Cu2+ and Zn2+), inhibits peptide aggregation, substantially reduces oxidative stress, and controls the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Both NPs ...

A Guanidine-Supported π-Complex of Germanium Amenable to Intramolecular C-C Cleavage in Arene and Ge Atom Transfer
Chemistry. 2023 Sep 21:e202301981. doi: 10.1002/chem.202301981. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe germylone dimNHCGe (dimNHC = diimino N-heterocyclic carbene) reacts with azides N3R (R = SiMe3 or p-tolyl) to furnish the first examples of germanium π-complexes, i.e. guanidine-ligated compounds (dimNHI-SiMe3)Ge (NHI= N-heterocyclic imine, R= SiMe3) and (dimNHI-Tol)Ge (R= p-tolyl). DFT calculations suggest that these species are formed by a Staudinger type replacement of dinitrogen in the azide by a nucleophilic germylone, leading to a transient carbene adduct of iminogermylidene. Heating a solution of compound (dimNHI-SiMe3...

Harnessing the Peterson Reaction for the Stereospecific Synthesis of Z-Vinyl Ethers
Chemistry. 2023 Sep 21:e202302708. doi: 10.1002/chem.202302708. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVinyl ethers are valuable synthetic intermediates which are also found as natural products, including aflatoxins, rifamycins and plasmalogens. The latter are ubiquitous phospholipids in human cells and contain a vinyl ether moiety with specifically Z configuration. Although numerous methods are available for synthesis of vinyl ethers, there is a lack of methods for obtaining Z isomers of molecules of the type RCH=CHOR' that are applicable to plasmalogens. A variant of the Peterson reaction is described that generates such molecule...

Diversification of Carbodicarbene Class by Embedding an Anionic Component in its Scaffold
We report the synthesis of the first anionic CDC pincer Pd complexes containing a BF2 moiety within the framework, a charge-frustration zwitterion approach to leverage the electronic feature of carbon(0)/carbone, which is unprecedented. The elucidation of X-ray crystal structures, ligand competition as well as transmetallation experiments suggest that the anionic moiety has enhanced the overall donor strength of the traditional neutral CDC. Importantly, this anionic scaffold exhibits a facile second coordination toward Au(I), Ag(I) and Pd(II) without any external ligand assistance, whereas previously reported neutral pince...

Chiral-at-Metal Racemization Unraveled for MX2(a-chel)2 by means of a Computational Analysis of MoO2(acnac)2
Chemistry. 2023 Sep 20:e202302516. doi: 10.1002/chem.202302516. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOctahedral chiral-at-metal complexes MX2(a-chel)2 (a-chel = asymmetric chelate) can rearrange their ligands by four mechanisms known as the Bailar (B), Ray-Dutt (RD), Conte-Hippler (CH), and Dhimba-Muller-Lammertsma (DML) twists. Racemization involves their interconnections, which were computed for MoO2(acnac)2 (acnac = β-ketoiminate) using density functional theory at ωB97x-D with the 6-31G(d,p) and 6-311G(2d,p) basis sets and LANL2DZ for molybdenum. Racemizing the cis(NN) isomer, being the global energy minimum with trans orie...

Chem Asian J. 2023 Sep 21:e202300701. doi: 10.1002/asia.202300701. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNear-Infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging with the advantages of deep tissue penetration and minimum background, has been widely employed and developed in the study of biological applications. However, small Stokes shifts, difficulty in optical tuning, and pH sensitivity are still the major limitations faced by current NIR dyes. To solve these problems, we rationally designed a pH insensitive amino-tunable NIR oxazine fluorophore DQF-NH2, which exhibited large Stokes shift (125 nm) accompanied with NIR excitation/emission due to...
