The Prevalence of Cognitive Impairment among Medicare Beneficiaries Who Use Outpatient Physical Therapy
CONCLUSION: One in five older adults who use outpatient physical therapy services have cognitive impairment. Further, cognitive impairment is more common in older physical therapy patients who report worse physical function and less physical activity.IMPACT: Physical therapists should consider cognitive screening for vulnerable older adults to inform tailoring of clinical practice towards a patient's ability to remember and process rehabilitation recommendations.PMID:37615482 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzad115

TENDINopathy Severity assessment - Achilles (TENDINS-A): Development and Content Validity assessment of a new Patient-Reported Outcome Measure for Achilles Tendinopathy
CONCLUSION: TENDINS-A has established content validity and is appropriate for use with clinical and research populations. We recommend users interpret TENDINS-A results cautiously, until further testing evaluates the most appropriate scoring scale, reliability, construct validity, criterion validity and responsiveness of TENDINS-A. Until these psychometric properties are established, we suggest using TENDINS-A alongside existing tools.PMID:37615161 | DOI:10.2519/jospt.2023.11964

Current Evidence-based Approaches to Multimodal Pain Control and Opioid Minimization After Arthroscopic and Knee Preservation Surgery
J Am Acad Orthop Surg. 2023 Aug 21. doi: 10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00342. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNonarthroplasty knee procedures are common and may cause a wide spectrum of postoperative pain, ranging from minimal to severe, depending on the patient, pathology, and procedure. Procedures include ligament repair and reconstruction, especially anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal débridement, repair and transplant, periarticular osteotomy, and cartilage restoration. Multimodal analgesia regimens have been implemented successfully, but notable variation characterizes current protocols. Increased public and phys...

The influence of pain-related comorbidities on pain intensity and pain-related psychological distress in patients presenting with musculoskeletal pain
CONCLUSIONS: Depression was associated with greater pain intensity. No comorbidities were able to account for the extent of pain-related psychological distress.PMID:37611373 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjpt.2023.100532

Non-Pharmacological Treatment for Chronic Migraine
AbstractPurpose of ReviewChronic migraine (CM) affects a large proportion of the population and is a significant source of disability and lost productivity. Numerous non-pharmacological approaches have been attempted during the past decades. This review discusses the most recent and evidence-based advances in acute and preventive non-pharmacological therapeutic approaches for CM, offering alternatives to drug treatment.Recent FindingsA growing number of non-pharmacological treatment options, including non-invasive or invasive neuromodulation, acupuncture, psychotherapy, and physiotherapy, have shown promising efficacy in C...

Comparison of Joint Mobilization and Movement Pattern Training for Patients with Hip-Related Groin Pain: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS: A large RCT to assess the effects of JtMob and MoveTrain for patients with HRGP may be feasible. Preliminary findings suggested that JtMob or MoveTrain may result in improvements in patient-reported pain and activity limitations.IMPACT: The COVID-19 pandemic interfered with participation, but a randomized controlled trial may be feasible. Modification may be needed if the trial is completed during future pandemics.PMID:37606253 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzad111

Are Exercise Interventions in Clinical Trials for Chronic Low Back Pain Dosed Appropriately to Meet the World Health Organization's Physical Activity Guidelines?
CONCLUSION: Few interventions tested in clinical trials for people with CLBP prescribe an exercise type and dose consistent with the WHO guidelines. Therefore, they do not appear sufficiently dosed to achieve broader health outcomes. Future trials should investigate the effect of WHO guideline-recommended exercise interventions on patient-reported outcomes (pain and disability) as well as health-related outcomes in people with CLBP.IMPACT: This exploratory analysis showed the lack of exercise interventions in the CLBP literature that meet the WHO's physical activity guidelines. With people in chronic pain groups, such as p...
