Features of repeated muscle biopsies and phenotypes of monocytes in paired blood samples and clinical long-term response to treatment in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy: a pilot study.
CONCLUSIONS: Baseline biopsy, monocyte profile or clinical data did not predict long-term treatment response, but in the repeated biopsy within 1 year of immunosuppressive treatment, the lower number of macrophages (CD68+) seemed to predict a more favourable long-term clinical response with regard to improved muscle strength. Correlation between quantitative and semiquantitative magnetic resonance imaging and histopathology findings in dermatomyositis.
CONCLUSIONS: Key MRI findings correlate with the main features of dermatomyositis muscle biopsy results, suggesting that MRI findings could be used as a surrogate marker of disease activity. PMID: 30620292 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Tacrolimus combined with corticosteroids effectively improved the outcome of a cohort of patients with immune-mediated necrotising myopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: Early co-administration of tacrolimus with corticosteroid promoted the remission and recovery of patients with IMNM and seemed to be a relatively safe treatment programme for physician managing immune-mediated necrotising myopathy. PMID: 30620290 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical characteristics and mortality rate of the Thai elderly onset systemic sclerosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Myopathy and limitation of physical activity were frequently found among elderly onset SSc over against pulmonary involvement than in adult onset SSc. Mortality of elderly onset SSc was 5.7 times higher, and median survival was 11 years shorter, than adult onset SSc. PMID: 29998834 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

One biopsy, two diagnoses: statin-induced autoimmune myopathy in combination with extranodal marginal zone lymphoma.

Necrotising myopathy associated with anti-signal recognition particle (anti-SRP) antibody.
CONCLUSIONS: Unlike the cases described in the literature, there was a high frequency of extra-muscular symptoms in the patients studied. Moreover, one fifth of patients had previous exposure to statin use. There was a high relapse rates, but with good clinical and laboratory recovery, especially with pulse therapy regimen of methylprednisolone and/or IVIg. Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia in rheumatic disease: a 20-year single-centre experience.
CONCLUSIONS: PJP portends high mortality yet is a largely preventable complication of rheumatic disease treatment. Consideration to initiate prophylaxis should be made for patients exceeding the daily 20 mg prednisone threshold, and those receiving cyclophosphamide. PMID: 28134084 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Molecular markers of systemic autoimmune disorders: the expression of MHC-located HSP70 genes is significantly associated with autoimmunity development.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest an involvement of the MHC-linked HSP70 genes in the pathology of studied autoimmune disorders. Therefore, the HSPA1A and HSPA1B genes might serve as an interesting candidate molecule for development of distinct types of autoimmunities. PMID: 28032847 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Interferon-regulated chemokine score associated with improvement in disease activity in refractory myositis patients treated with rituximab.
CONCLUSIONS: IFN-regulated chemokines before treatment is associated with improvement in disease activity measures in refractory myositis patients treated with rituximab. PMID: 26446265 [PubMed - in process]

Myositis in primary Sjögren's syndrome: data from a multicentre cohort.
CONCLUSIONS: Our retrospective analysis shows a prevalence of myositis in pSS lower than previously reported, mainly appearing as an overlapping syndrome. Histological findings confirm the possible presence of an IBM or of a myopathy more similar to PM with a decreased COX activity. Classical immunosuppressants are effective although in most difficult cases IVIg or RTX may be used with benefit. PMID: 26088683 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Reduction of ovarian reserve in adult patients with dermatomyositis.
CONCLUSIONS: We identified a diminished ovarian reserve in DM patients of reproductive age. Further studies are necessary to assess the idiopathic inflammatory myopathy-related factors involved in the ovarian impairment of this patient population. PMID: 25571898 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Anti-SSA/Ro52 autoantibodies in scleroderma: results of an observational, cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study show that anti-SSA/Ro52 antibodies are often found in SSc patients. No clinical manifestations, including inflammatory myopathy, were related with anti-SSA/Ro antibodies. PMID: 25372801 [PubMed - in process]

Effects of adalimumab treatment on endothelial cell activation markers in the skeletal muscle of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
CONCLUSIONS: Adalimumab treatment was associated with decreased expression of endothelial markers previously associated with severe systemic inflammation in RA. Our findings indicate a reduced endothelial activation in patients treated with anti-TNF drugs, which might contribute to a lower risk of cardiovascular co-morbidity.
