Strategies for Developing the Affective Domain of Novice Nurses
J Contin Educ Nurs. 2023 Feb;54(2):56-57. doi: 10.3928/00220124-20230113-03. Epub 2023 Feb 1.ABSTRACTAn important focus for clinical nurse educators is facilitating learner development and socialization. When evaluating learning, there are three domains that can be assessed: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. The cognitive and psychomotor domains are typically well assessed in nursing education. A review of the literature published between 2015 and 2022 suggests that there has been no universal approach to how clinical nurse educators implement the affective domain for novice nurses. The affective domain consists of de...

What are Common Causes of Anaphylaxis?
Discussion Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction of the body. Usually anaphylaxis is IgE mediated but complement-mediated immune complex reactions or IgG mediated reactions can cause anaphylaxis. Usually mucous membranes or skin are involved, but it is a systemic disease process with at least 2 systems involved (respiratory is second most common followed by gastrointestinal system). The epidemiology is difficult to discern but the estimated incidence is about 50-112 episodes per 100,000 person-years and estimated prevalence is 0.3-5.1%. There is data supporting an increased incidence. Over...

Medical adjuvant treatment to increase patency of arteriovenous fistulae and grafts
CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analyses of three studies for ticlopidine (an antiplatelet treatment), which all used the same dose of treatment but with a short follow-up of only one month, suggest ticlopidine may have a beneficial effect as an adjuvant treatment to increase the patency of AVFs and AVGs in the short term. There was insufficient evidence to determine if there was a difference in graft patency between placebo and other treatments such as aspirin, fish oil, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, dipyridamole plus aspirin, warfarin, sulphinpyrazone and GTN patch. The certainty of the evidence was low to moderate due to short follo...

Complications in skin grafts when continuing antithrombotic therapy prior to cutaneous surgery requiring skin grafting: an observational study.
Authors: Jørgensen L, Matzen RD, Albertsdottir E, Birk-Sørensen L Abstract Use of anticoagulants is common and practice regarding continuation or discontinuation of the medication peri-operatively for cutaneous surgery lacks evidence-based consensus. Therefore, we aimed to do a prospective observational study with patients who were referred to cutaneous surgery and needed full thickness or split skin grafting and using antitrombotic or non-antitrombotic therapies. Data on patients characteristics, diagnosis, location of surgery and surgery performed, antithrombotic medication and complications in skin grafts were...

What is the role of 'theory' in training GP trainers?
Educ Prim Care. 2023 Sep 6:1-5. doi: 10.1080/14739879.2023.2253539. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA recent evaluation paper of the London General Practitioner Trainer Course by Knight et al questions the importance of educational theory in preparing GPs to become trainers and asks 'how much educational theory do GP trainers need to know in order to train effectively?' This paper places the authors' question under consideration, arguing that before the relationship between the theory and practice of education can be considered, the nature of 'educational practice' needs examination. There then follows a discussion of the wo...
