Recent advances in neurometabolic diseases: The genetic role in the modern era
Epilepsy Behav. 2023 Jul 13;145:109338. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109338. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe global birth prevalence of all inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) in children (49 studies, 1980-2017) is approximately 50.9/100,000 live births. Regional pooled birth prevalence showed higher rates in Eastern Mediterranean regions (75.7/100,000 live births) and highest in Saudi Arabia (169/100,000) with higher parental consanguinity rates of ∼60%. Case fatality rates globally are estimated to be 33% or higher. IEMs are a group of >600 heterogeneous disorders often presenting in newborns and infants with drug-res...

Statistical Optimization of Biosurfactant Production from < em > Aspergillus niger < /em > SA1 Fermentation Process and Mathematical Modeling
In this study, we sought to investigate the production and optimization of biosurfactants by soil fungi isolated from petroleum oil-contaminated soil in Saudi Arabia. Forty-four fungal isolates were isolated from ten petroleum oil-contaminated soil samples. All isolates were identified using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, and biosurfactant screening showed that thirty-nine of the isolates were positive. Aspergillus niger SA1 was the highest biosurfactant producer, demonstrating surface tension, drop collapsing, oil displacement, and an emulsification index (E24) of 35.8 mN/m, 0.55 cm, 6.7 cm, and 70%, respec...

Parents' knowledge regarding first-aid management of epistaxis in children in Taif, Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that most Saudi parents had a moderate level of knowledge regarding first-aid management of epistaxis. Additionally, several factors, such as the number of children, age, those attending first-aid courses, and experience treating others with epistaxis, were associated with the level of knowledge among parents. Further larger studies are required among Saudi parents to examine the knowledge, practice, and related factors regarding first-aid management of epistaxis.PMID:37448931 | PMC:PMC10336953 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1925_22

Role delineation of advanced practice nursing: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Advanced practice nursing roles and activities are being practised in Saudi Arabia; however, there is no clear delineation of these roles and activities according to a unified and national-level APN scope of practice.IMPACTS: Advanced practice nursing roles are evolving in Saudi Arabia; however, no study has examined the existing patterns of APN activities in Saudi Arabia. This study highlights the practice patterns of advanced practice nurses and adds to the international evidence base on the need for delineating APN activities under a unified scope of practice. The findings of this study are beneficial to pra...

Inequitable treatment as perceived by international medical graduates (IMGs): a scoping review
Conclusions This study found evidence that IMGs believe they are subject to numerous common inequitable workplace experiences and that these experiences have self-reported repercussions on well-being and career trajectory. Further research is needed to substantiate correlations and causality in relation to outcomes of well-being and differential career attainment. Furthermore, research into support for IMGs and the creation of more equitable workforce environments is also recommended.

Effects of mindfulness-based childbirth education on prenatal anxiety: A quasi-experimental study
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2023 Jul 8;238:103978. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2023.103978. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPregnancy and childbirth represent a sequence of challenging events, and adaptive coping strategies are necessary to maintain emotional wellbeing. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of applying a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) for pregnant Saudi women with anxiety in the third trimester. A quasi-experimental, within- and between-subject design was used for this study. Data were collected at two points between February and August 2021 from 88 participants using the Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Que...
