How Are Schools and Departments Assigned to NIH Grants?
For decades, NIH has collected and curated information on the schools and departments associated with the grants awarded to domestic higher education academic institutions to provide statistics on the fields contributing to advances in biomedical research. This information appears in NIH RePORTER (Figure 1), NIH Awards by Location and Organization, and other reports issued by NIH. Last year, like so many other conference hosts around the world, NIH shifted to a virtual seminar platform. I confess, we were not sure exactly what would happen;...

Getting Ready for the Next NIH Forms Update
From time to time we need to update our application forms to maintain consistency with Grants.gov and Office of Management and Budget federal-wide requirements, and to incorporate changes in NIH policies and processes. NIH issued a Guide notice on April 27, announcing how we are gearing up for a transition from the current forms (“FORMS-D”) to the next iteration of forms for due dates on or after January 25, 2018. Looking for a NIH Program Official in Your Research Area?
For years researchers have used the Matchmaker feature in NIH RePORTER to identify NIH-funded projects similar to their supplied abstracts, research bios, or other scientific text. Matchmaker was recently enhanced to make it just as easy to identify NIH program officials whose portfolios include projects in your research area. After entering your scientific text (up to 15,000 characters), Matchmaker will analyze the key terms and concepts to identify up to 500 similar projects. Those projects will continue to show on the Projects tab with handy charts to visualize the results and quickly filter identified projects by Insti...

With the winter season upon us, remember that when a due date falls on a weekend, Federal holiday, or when Washington, D.C.-area Federal offices close (due to severe weather, for example), the application deadline is automatically extended to the next business day. If you suspect Federal offices in D.C. are closed due to severe weather you can check OPM.gov to verify. Only when Federal offices in the Washington, D.C. area are listed as “Operating Status: CLOSED” is the application deadline automatically extended to the next day. See NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-17-041 for additional details.  If your local wint...
