Backyard chickens harbor many parasites
(University of California - Riverside) Backyard chickens may not live as good of a life as most people think. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have found backyard chickens are more likely than chickens on commercial chicken farms to be infested by ectoparasites, which are parasites such as fleas, lice and mites that live on the exterior of an organism. Their work was published online today in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

ESA names winners of AFRI student travel grants
(Entomological Society of America) The Entomological Society of America is pleased to announce that ten entomology students are recipients of travel grants awarded by the US Department of Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative. The grants will provide financial support to graduate students for new networking, presentation, and research opportunities at Entomology 2014, the Entomology Society of America's 62nd Annual Meeting this November in Portland, Ore.

UC Riverside entomologist receives international honor for chemical ecology contributions
(University of California - Riverside) Jocelyn Millar, a professor of entomology and cooperating faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Riverside, has been awarded the Silver Medal for career achievement by the International Society of Chemical Ecology (ISCE). Awarded first in 1986, the ISCE Silver Medal is the society's highest honor. It is awarded annually to scientists who have made outstanding contributions to chemical ecology, the study of chemicals that mediate interactions between living organisms.

Spotlight on important agricultural pests
(University of California - Riverside) Hemipteran insects include many important economically damaging pests such as aphids, whiteflies, psyllids, leafhoppers, and thrips. Nearly 150 scientists from 18 states within the United States and 24 other countries will gather at the University of California, Riverside, June 22-25, to discuss these global pests. The 2nd International Hemipteran-Plant Interactions Symposium will bring together scientists, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in entomology, plant biology and plant pathology from all continents in the world, except Antarctica.

Conference to turn spotlight on urban pests

Entomologists update definitions to tackle resistance to biotech crops and pesticides
(Entomological Society of America) The current jumble of terms about insects and weeds that are resistant to pesticides has fostered confusion among scientists. To address this, entomologists from the University of Arizona and Michigan State University have updated definitions for 50 key terms related to pesticide resistance in a new article in the Journal of Economic Entomology.

Ordinary conditioner removes head lice eggs as effectively as special products
(Entomological Society of America) Some shampoos and conditioners that contain chemicals or special oils are marketed as nit-removal products for head lice eggs. However, new research just published in the Journal of Medical Entomology shows that ordinary hair conditioner is just as effective.
