ESA announces finalists for the 2016 YouTube Your Entomology contest

For the 2016 contest, 43 videos were submitted, and the ESA judges recently selected five finalists.

With flying colors: Top entomology students honored with wasp species named after them
(Pensoft Publishers) The highly divergent parasitic wasps have long been causing headaches to scientists. At one point, taxonomists began using some genera as 'dumping grounds for unplaced members' simply to organize the species. Two entomologists have recently addressed one such issue by describing 10 new genera and even more new species in the open-access journal ZooKeys. Two of the new species are named after excellent entomology students and one bears the name of a mythological monster.

ESA names winners of AFRI student travel grants

Ordinary conditioner removes head lice eggs as effectively as special products

Entomologists update definitions to tackle resistance to biotech crops and pesticides
(Entomological Society of America) The current jumble of terms about insects and weeds that are resistant to pesticides has fostered confusion among scientists. To address this, entomologists from the University of Arizona and Michigan State University have updated definitions for 50 key terms related to pesticide resistance in a new article in the Journal of Economic Entomology.

Spotlight on important agricultural pests
(University of California - Riverside) Hemipteran insects include many important economically damaging pests such as aphids, whiteflies, psyllids, leafhoppers, and thrips. Nearly 150 scientists from 18 states within the United States and 24 other countries will gather at the University of California, Riverside, June 22-25, to discuss these global pests. The 2nd International Hemipteran-Plant Interactions Symposium will bring together scientists, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in entomology, plant biology and plant pathology from all continents in the world, except Antarctica.
