Conceptualizing "Preparedness for Practice": Perspectives of Early-Career Family Physicians
CONCLUSIONS: Preparedness for practice involves an interplay of dynamic and complex constructs from competence, self-confidence, capability, and adaptability. Preparedness is more than possessing several competencies; it calls for integrating and applying competencies in complex and changing environments. This study aimed to start a discussion on what end point is desirable for residency education and proposed that the end point needs to move beyond competencies.PMID:37643091 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.294689

Navigating Nurses: Supporting Retention Through Mentorship
J Contin Educ Nurs. 2023 Sep;54(9):389-391. doi: 10.3928/00220124-20230816-02. Epub 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTRetaining nurses is critical. Doing so effectively requires identifying not only why some nurses are leaving but also why others are staying. Discovering a sense of belonging and opportunities for professional development, especially for early career nurses, are two common themes. A mentorship framework was created within a nurse residency program integrating both motives, with positive results for the mentors and mentees alike. Does "Hoarding" Impact Interview Distribution Among Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Applicants? A Modeling Study Based on a Large Database
CONCLUSION: Orthopaedic surgery interview data demonstrated an expected uneven distribution of interview invitations, with a small proportion of highly competitive applicants receiving a higher number of interview offers as well as a large group of applicants receiving no interview invitations in Thalamus. Concerns that "hoarding" would lead to a crisis resulting in many unmatched residency positions seemed unfounded, given the excess of applicants relative to positions and the minimal change in the distribution of interviews in the cap model.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Medical students applying to orthopaedic residency should see...

Factors Affecting the Choice to Specialize in Medical Toxicology
CONCLUSIONS: Among current fellows and recent graduates of medical toxicology, having a mentor in the field of medical toxicology, having exposure to medical toxicology during residency, and participating in a clinical rotation in medical toxicology were common shared experiences that led to the decision to subspecialize in the field. These results may guide targeted intervention to continue to recruit strong candidates to medical toxicology.PMID:37639079 | DOI:10.1007/s13181-023-00965-z
