Surgical approach to hysterectomy for benign gynaecological disease
CONCLUSIONS: Among women undergoing hysterectomy for benign disease, VH appears to be superior to AH. When technically feasible, VH should be performed in preference to AH because it is associated with faster return to normal activities, fewer wound/abdominal wall infections and shorter hospital stay. Where VH is not possible, LH has advantages over AH including faster return to normal activities, shorter hospital stay, and decreased risk of wound/abdominal wall infection, febrile episodes or unspecified infection, and transfusion. These advantages must be balanced against the increased risk of ureteric injury and longer o...

Idiopathic omental hemorrhage: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionPresence of positive focused assessment with sonography in trauma, abdominal pain, imaging evidence of fluid accumulation, and a reduction in hemoglobin levels collectively indicate the likelihood of arteriovenous malformation occurrence. The treatment options include surgical intervention and transcatheter arterial embolization. Surgical intervention is recommended for subjects with hemodynamic instability, persistent hypotension and those whose diagnosis is unconfirmed.

Fibrin-based haemostatic agents for reducing blood loss in adult liver resection
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence for the outcomes in both comparisons (FBHAs versus no intervention and FBHAs versus non-FBHAs) was of very low certainty (or low certainty in one instance) and cannot justify the routine use of FBHAs to reduce blood loss in adult liver resection. While the meta-analysis showed a reduced risk of reoperation with FBHAs compared with non-FBHAs, the analysis was confounded by the small number of trials reporting the event and the risk of bias in all these trials. Future trials should focus on the use of FBHAs in people undergoing liver resection who are at particularly high risk of bleeding. Investiga...

Surgery for women with apical vaginal prolapse
CONCLUSIONS: Sacral colpopexy is associated with lower risk of awareness of prolapse, recurrent prolapse on examination, repeat surgery for prolapse, and postoperative SUI than a variety of vaginal interventions. The limited evidence does not support the use of transvaginal mesh compared to native tissue repair for apical vaginal prolapse. There were no differences in primary outcomes for different routes of sacral colpopexy. However, the laparoscopic approach is associated with a shorter operating time than robotic approach, and shorter admission than open approach. There were no significant differences between vaginal hy...

Open surgical cholecystostomy under local anaesthesia as salvage therapy of acute cholecystitis during the 4th COVID-19 wave in Northern Italy: experience from a rural hospital
Acta Biomed. 2023 Jul 24;94(S1):e2023208. doi: 10.23750/abm.v94iS1.13586.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic outbreak delayed interventions of elective surgery worldwide. In Italy, the first western country to be affected, 410000 operations formerly planned were cancelled with the beginning of the first wave. Symptomatic cholelithiasis represents one of the most common, benign medical conditions in the world leading the affected patients to general surgeons'attention; in 0.5% of cases gallstones (symptomatic or not) can complicate with acute lithiasic cholecystitis (ALC) whose universally acknowledged treatment of choice is lapa...

A rare case of isolated gallbladder rupture following blunt abdominal trauma
We present a case of gallbladder traumatic rupture in a 47-year-old patient involved in a motor vehicle collision, that presented abdominal pain with maximal intensity in the right upper quadrant.CT is the imaging technique of choice to diagnosis this entity, however the final diagnosis of gallbladder rupture is confirmed with laparoscopy. Cholecystectomy is the definitive treatment.PMID:37462372 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS1.14123

Standardization of rectal cancer surgery and bowel preparation in Austria : A  multicenter nationwide survey by the Austrian Society of Surgical Oncology
CONCLUSION: Considering the low number of low anterior resections performed in each hospital per year in Austria, defined centers for rectal cancer surgery are still scarce. Many hospitals did not transfer recommended bowel preparation guidelines into clinical practice.PMID:37358643 | DOI:10.1007/s00508-023-02227-y
