This study explored the association between different cooking fuel types and the risk of cancer and all-cause mortality among seniors constructing Cox regression models. Data were obtained by linking waves of 6, 7, and 8 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included a total of 7,269 participants who were 65 years old and over. Cooking fuels were categorized as either biomass, fossil, or clean fuels. And the effects of switching cooking fuels on death risk were also investigated using Cox regression models. The results indicate that, compared with the users of clean fuels, individuals using bio...

Leprosy rash precipitated by immunotherapy for suspected inflammatory neuropathy
We describe a 38-year-old woman with a 4-year history of progressive numbness of the left hand incorrectly diagnosed as multifocal acquired demyelinating sensory and motor neuropathy on the basis of clinical and neurophysiological findings. Treatment with empirical weekly corticosteroid followed by intravenous immunoglobulin resulted in the sudden development of a widespread rash; we then diagnosed borderline lepromatous leprosy on skin biopsy. We postulate that the immune treatments induced a temporary state of immune tolerance followed by a rebound of a T cell-mediated immune response resulting in a type 1 immunological ...

Diagnosis and treatment of Merkel cell carcinoma: European consensus-based interdisciplinary guideline - Update 2022
Eur J Cancer. 2022 Jun 19;171:203-231. doi: 10.1016/j.ejca.2022.03.043. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMerkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin cancer, accounting for less than 1% of all cutaneous malignancies. It is found predominantly in white populations and risk factors include advanced age, ultraviolet exposure, male sex, immunosuppression, such as AIDS/HIV infection, haematological malignancies or solid organ transplantation, and Merkel cell polyomavirus infection. MCC is an aggressive tumour with 26% of cases presenting lymph node involvement at diagnosis and 8% with distant metastases. Five-year overall survival r...

In conclusion, fisetin supplementation may be a novel strategy to target excess cellular senescence and thereby reduce mitochondrial ROS to improve NO-mediated endothelial function with aging. Exercise Upregulates BDNF Expression to Promote Dopamine Release and Brain Function https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2022/05/exercise-upregulates-bdnf-expression-to-promote-dopamine-release-and-brain-function/ Researchers have in the past shown that exercise results in greater amounts of BDNF, which in turn promotes neurogenesis. Here, this line of research is extended to show that exercise results in an increas...

Neurosurgical management of patients with neurocutaneous melanosis: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Current management of NCM includes CSF shunting to reduce intracranial pressure, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and palliative care. Neurosurgical intervention can aid in the diagnosis of NCM through tissue biopsy and resection of lesions with surgical decompression. Further evidence is required to establish the clinical outcomes of this rare entity and to describe the diverse spectrum of intracranial and intraspinal abnormalities present.PMID:35535823 | DOI:10.3171/2022.2.FOCUS21791
