Targeting the opioid remifentanil: Protective effects and molecular mechanisms against organ ischemia-reperfusion injury
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 14;167:115472. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115472. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOpioids are widely used in clinical practice by activating opioid receptors (OPRs), but their clinical application is limited by a series of side effects. Researchers have been making tremendous efforts to promote the development and application of opioids. Fortunately, recent studies have identified the additional effects of opioids in addition to anesthesia and analgesia, particularly in terms of organ protection against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, with unique advantages. I/R injury in vital organs not onl...

Look-alike medications in the perioperative setting: scoping review of medication incidents and risk reduction interventions
ConclusionThis review highlighted challenges with look-alike medications in the perioperative setting and identified interventions for risk reduction. Key interventions did not involve technology-based solutions and further research is required to assess their effectiveness in preventing patient harm.

Volatile anesthetics inhibit presynaptic cGMP signaling to depress presynaptic excitability in rat hippocampal neurons
Neuropharmacology. 2023 Sep 6:109705. doi: 10.1016/j.neuropharm.2023.109705. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVolatile anesthetics alter presynaptic function through effects on Ca2+ influx and neurotransmitter release. These actions are proposed to play important roles in their pleiotropic neurophysiological effects including immobility, unconsciousness and amnesia. Nitric oxide and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (NO/cGMP) signaling has been implicated in presynaptic mechanisms, and disruption of NO/cGMP signaling has been shown to alter sensitivity to volatile anesthetics in vivo. We investigated volatile anesthetic actions ...

Osmundacetone alleviates cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats
In this study, we investigated the protective effect of DHBAc on the brain tissue of rats with cerebral I/R injury. Rats were respectively given nimodipine (NI), low dose (L-DHBAc) and high dose (H-DHBAc) Osmundacetone, and they were killed under anesthesia after 24 hours of reperfusion. And neurological impairment scores, cerebral infarct size and cerebral pathological changes were respectively detected, and mRNA expression of recombinant kelch like ECH associated protein 1 (Keap1) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), protein expression levels of caspase3, cleaved caspase3, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and q...
