Acute Myocardial Infarction and Risk of Cognitive Impairment and Dementia: A Review
Biology (Basel). 2023 Aug 21;12(8):1154. doi: 10.3390/biology12081154.ABSTRACTCognitive impairment (CI) shares common cardiovascular risk factors with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and is increasingly prevalent in our ageing population. Whilst AMI is associated with increased rates of CI, CI remains underreported and infrequently identified in patients with AMI. In this review, we discuss the evidence surrounding AMI and its links to dementia and CI, including pathophysiology, risk factors, management and interventions. Vascular dysregulation plays a major role in CI, with atherosclerosis, platelet activation, microin...

Impact of age on pre-procedural TIMI flow in STEMI patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention
CONCLUSION: The present study shows that among STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI, more advanced age represents an independent predictor of preprocedural IRA patency. Future studies will define the implications on procedural results and long-term prognosis.PMID:37605955 | DOI:10.2459/JCM.0000000000001482

Effect of Alirocumab Added to High-Intensity Statin on Platelet Reactivity and Non-coding RNAs in AMI Patients: A Substudy of the PACMAN-AMI Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Among AMI patients receiving DAPT with a potent P2Y12 inhibitor, alirocumab had no significant effect on platelet reactivity as assessed by PRU and platelet-derived non-coding RNAs.PMID:37595625 | DOI:10.1055/a-2156-7872

Risk Factors for Vulnerable Plaque Detected Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Patients Receiving Statin Therapy with No History of Coronary Artery Disease
In conclusion, this study supports a more comprehensive and aggressive lipid-lowering therapy for the primary prevention of coronary artery disease.PMID:37518337 | DOI:10.1536/ihj.23-011

Clinical Profiles, Outcomes, and Sex Differences of Patients With STEMI: Findings From the NORIN-STEMI Registry
CONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary registry of patients with STEMI in India, female patients were less likely to receive PCI after STEMI and had a higher 1-year mortality compared with male patients. These findings have important public health implications, and further efforts are required to reduce these gaps.PMID:37396424 | PMC:PMC10308105 | DOI:10.1016/j.jacasi.2022.12.011

The association between circulating lipoprotein subfractions and lipid content in coronary atheromatous plaques assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy
CONCLUSION: In this study, serum levels of Lp(a) and free cholesterol in the smallest HDL subfractions showed the strongest potential as predictors for lipid content in coronary atheromatous plaques. Although the evidence is modest, our study suggests that measurement of lipoprotein subfractions may provide additional information with respect to coronary plaque composition compared to traditional lipid measurements, but not in addition to established risk factors. Further and larger studies are needed to assess the potential of circulating lipoprotein subfractions as meaningful biomarkers both for lipid content in coronary...

Genetic Testing Enables the Diagnosis of Familial Hypercholesterolemia Underdiagnosed by Clinical Criteria: Analysis of Japanese Early-Onset Coronary Artery Disease Patients
Cardiol Res Pract. 2023 Apr 28;2023:2236422. doi: 10.1155/2023/2236422. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTDefinitive diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is paramount for the risk management of patients and their relatives. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of gene variants contributing to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) metabolism and their clinical relevance in patients with early-onset coronary artery disease (EOCAD). Among 63 consecutive patients with EOCAD (men <55 years or women <65 years) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from 2013 to 2019 at Keio Universit...
