The societal cost of vaccine refusal: A modelling study using measles vaccination as a case study
Vaccine. 2023 May 30:S0264-410X(23)00589-3. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.05.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Increasing vaccine hesitancy and refusal poses a challenge to public health as even small reductions in vaccine uptake can result in large outbreaks of infectious diseases. Here we estimate the societal costs of vaccine refusal using measles as a case study.METHODS: We developed a compartmental metapopulation model of measles transmission to explore how the changes in the size and level of social mixing between populations that are "pro-vaccination", and "anti-vaccination" impacts the burden of measles....

Disseminated life-threatening viral skin rash in a child with atopic dermatitis
We report the case of a toddler, with a history of mild atopic dermatitis (AD) since early infancy, presented to the Giannina Gaslini, a pediatric polyclinic hospital, 14 days after measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination, for the occurrence of a disseminated vesico-pustular rash, accompanied by general malaise, fever, restlessness, and anorexia. Eczema herpeticum (EH) was diagnosed clinically and confirmed by laboratory examinations. The exact pathogenesis of EH in AD is still debated and possibly involves an inter-play between altered cell-mediated and humoral immunity, failure to up-regulate antiviral proteins, and expo...

State Policy Removing the Personal Belief Exemption for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) School Immunization Requirement, Washington State, 2014-2022
Conclusions. EHB 1638 was associated with an increase in MMR vaccine series completion rates and a decrease in any MMR exemption. However, effects were partially offset by an increase in religious exemption rates. Public Health Implications. Removal of personal belief exemptions for the MMR immunization requirement only may be an effective approach to increase MMR vaccine coverage rates statewide and among underimmunized communities. Mumps resurgence in a highly vaccinated population: Insights gained from surveillance in Canada, 2002-2020
Vaccine. 2023 May 9:S0264-410X(23)00513-3. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.04.078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough mumps vaccination has been routine in Canada for decades, mumps cases and outbreaks continue to occur periodically. Mumps surveillance, including monitoring of the mumps virus genotype associated with disease activity, is important to document baseline activity and to advance further research into vaccine effectiveness. Here we describe a detailed analysis of mumps cases that have been detected in Canada from 2002 to 2020, with a focus on the mumps molecular epidemiology. In total, 7395 cases of mumps were ...
